I did try to do without a sewing/craft center in my home for a while, thinking I didn't have time for that stuff any more, anyway. Turns out it's really something I NEED to be happy. Creating is a part of who I am and I don't function properly without it. Yes, I definitely need to have my priorities straight (for example, homeschooling my children IS more important than crocheting an afghan, believe it or not ), but creativity, crafting, has to fit in somewhere. Crafting is one of my only emotional outlets, because I don't talk a lot or easily, and I can't be bothered writing that much (blogging doesn't count as writing for some reason).
Crafting, creating, making also allows me the freedom to be frugal -- I can (and will, hopefully) make my entire maternity wardrobe out of fabrics I already have. I can make quilts and afghans to keep my kids warm. I can make my own dish cloths, bed linens and towels. I can make all of my Christmas gifts from materials already in my stash. I am not at the mercy of the department store if I need pretty dresses for my girls or summer outfits for my boys.
Crafting also allows me to express my love for my family and friends in a tangible and individual way. My children all sleep under quilts made by mama. They know I made them each a quilt because I love and treasure them. My sister received a handmade journal cover as a going-away present. She knows I made her that gift because I love her and value her friendship. My hand created gifts are an expression of how I think of each person.
So, keeping all of that in mind, it was important for me to carve out a space for my creative endeavors. I still need to work on it some, and weed out some of the things that I don't really need in there. It's also a constant effort to keep random things from being dropped in this area (it's located very near the front door). Oh, but it's mine. :-) I am thankful for that.

| Your craft corner is looking very organised!! I really need to get into something - even finshing half-done scrapbooking albums would be a good start. I am having trouble switching over from cleaning to crafts though - I feel guilty if I am doing something "fun" instead of work!! I know its silly but I can't help it - I have spent the last few years convincing myself that this is the way I need to do things. Its hard to find a balance, no matter which end of the spectrum you are in. Anyway, I love you and miss Mo too. We'll go out soon - just let me know when you have a free night. Love, Han |

Deb, I'm really happy that you've organised a corner for yourself. You're right in saying that creating is a big part of you and you wouldn't be "yourself" without it! I'm right there with you in the juggling act--for me it's long work hours vs everything else. I hope you and Han and I can find much more time to get together and well, just spend time together.
Love you. Mammam |

OH my gosh, I would love to have my own space as you have. That is so great. I get so tired of having to lug around my machine and pick it all back up in order to have the dinning room table to do homeschooling on. I have a spare room but it is already full to the brim with things. Maybe one day when all the kiddos leave the nest.

| Love your sewing/crafting space. It IS important to have your own space and do something that makes you happy! I need a flower garden for that, but also enjoy sewing, too, on a limited basis-I'm not that great at it and get frustrated easily. LOL Holly |

love your craft room, very organized
Actually, I have homeschooled and crocheted at the same time, when I have a nursing infant, like right now. Baby is 13 weeks old, and there are times of the day, when I just have to sit down and nurse him....so in the afternoon, I crochet sometimes while I am nursing on the couch and my 6 yr old brings me her work to go over/check....or she practices reading to me,etc.
It does go slowly that way, as I have to stop and start some, but sometimes I feel restless not working on something. I don't always do it, but my daughter always asks to help me crochet. So if I can, I take her on my lap and let her help me with the stitches....the only challenge is that she is left handed. Any hints for teaching a lefty to crochet?
