Monday, July 23, 2007 - A little light reading. |
I am currently reading through Extending the Table, by Joetta Handrick Schlabach. I bought this book after reading the More With Less Cookbook, and Living More With Less, both by Doris Janzen Longacre. All three books are convicting me more and more of the vast importance of good stewardship, and the responsibility we have to share whatever blessings the Lord has provided us. After reading so many stories of poverty and desperation, I can not possibly turn my back on this conviction. I have a responsibility to help, to reach out, to give and share everything I have. So do you.
This story broke my heart. I am sharing it here in the hope that it will break yours, and may our broken hearts move us to act.

Poverty often means that people have limited choices. In some cases the few choices they do have are cruel and dehumanizing.
One afternoon while I was living in Bangladesh, my best friend Monie took me to visit Ramona. Ramona greeted us at the door and invited us into her bamboo hut, surrounded by trees. It was nice to be out of the bright summer sun and heat.
As my eyes adjusted to the dimmer light inside, I saw the daughter Ramona was carrying on her hip. The girl's hair was almost white. Her eyes peered lifelessly at me from sunken sockets. The child appeared to be desperately ill. Nearly two years old, she was not strong enough to walk.
When Ramona stepped into the kitchen to make some tea, I whispered to Monie, "What's wrong with Ramona's daughter?" She replied quietly, "Ramona and her husband can no longer feed all the children they have, so they have chosen this daughter to die."

Thursday, November 8, 2007 - It is too much for us Westerners to believe.... |

but it happens EVERY day in some parts of the world!! I was a missionary's kid for part of my childhood.... my parents adopted a child that was being "sacrificed" because of extreme poverty!!! Now she is a healthy adult woman, getting married in April! We are soooooo blessed in America (and other wealthy nations!) We take basic things, like running water and food totally for granted!!!!! Very convicting!

| I believe it, Heather. I am so thankful for all we have and for the chance and responsibility we are given to help others. It is so HUGE. It is sometimes easy to forget the reality of the situation though, and reading a story like that helps to bring me back to it. Thanks for your note! I appreciate it. :-) |
