"Who's B.J.?"
Button, Jr.
"Huh?"
Allow me to bring you up to speed: B.J. (Button, Jr.) is one of the kittens from our latest litter of kittens born back at the end of April ~ Remember? up in the ductwork of the basement? B.J. is named after his Uncle Button (the original Button) because he has the identical big black spot ~ a button ~ on his side. And, well, Uncle Button didn't come home one night; we think one of the resident Barred Owls misguided him down the creekside path - if you get my meaning.
So when B.J. was born with this same big spot - well, we just had to name him after Uncle Button - so now you know who B.J. is and why.
But he has a sunburn.
On his ears.
He is predominantly white - including his ears - and since we continue to have 100+ degree days here, that makes the sun really harsh on little kitty ears; especially the whitish pinkish ones.
I noticed early yesterday that his little ears were real pink and hot. But the day before that, he had been stung in the nose and between his eyes by wasps that caused his little face to swell (he's had a bad few days around here, huh?). So when I discovered his "hot ears", I thought, at first, that it was a delayed fever reaction to the bee stings.
This morning ~ Son#1 discovered his ears were crusty and sunburned. Not good.
Poor thing.
We brought him in and covered his little ears in sunscreen.
This evening his ears are a little softer. We'll keep lotioning them up.
Meanwhile, a word to the wise: if you have white cats w/pink ears - they need "kitty sunscreen" (or something) or kept inside during this heat. Likewise, any pets with dark coats (Black/Chocolate Labs, etc.) need to be checked on constantly for overheating. Their coats absorb the heat and it can be fatal for some if not many pets.
