Works for Me Wednesday

Posted in Works for Me Wednesday

We are anxiously anticipating our 2nd Annual Birthday Bash for all the girls.  We borrowed the idea last year from the Jeub Family after watching their "Cheaper By the Dozen" episode on TLC.  We now have one birthday party for all the girls instead of seperate parties throughout the year.  Birthday parties can become more of a production the more we all try to keep up with the Jones'.  This solution seemed to answer all the problems.  But, more will be coming on the actual party, which is on Saturday.

Last night, the girls and I made our very first batch of GOOP.  If you've never been exposed to this phenomenon, it is pretty amazing.  The recipe includes white glue, distilled water, food coloring and borax.  Yep, that's it - simple isn't?

In one bowl combine 2 cups distilled water, 2 cups white glue and 15 - 30 drops of food coloring.  In another bowl combine 4 cups distilled water, 1 TBSP Borax and stir both bowls well.  After they are stirred, combine both bowls and watch what happens.

It turns into a goopy, gooey, fun piece of play-doh like, something or other to play with.  You can stretch it, mold it, fold it, toss it against a wall, pretend to sneeze it out of your nose, or turn it into breathe right strips.

Today while we were at the pool, I was pondering how much money we would be spending this summer on swim diapers for Little Bear.  When I realized, that we would need a diaper for each day at the pool, I began to mentally add up the enormous cost in my head for disposable swim diapers.  (Side note:  we visited our community pool every week day last summer from July - September)

Well, then I got to thinking. . . .  hmm - if I can use cloth diapers during the day, they must have come up with some kind of reusable cloth swim diaper.  Look what the power of "Google" brings you - reusable cloth swim diapers.  Now I can just wash them along with our swimsuits after every pool visit!

Works For Me Wednesday

Our Little Woman is going into her Senior year this coming school year.  We are not pushing her into going to college immediately after graduation, nor is it something she desires to do.  Rather, she feels led that if she goes on to further education after high school, it will be to acquire a trade skill that she can use during which time she is single, and/or married, before she has children.  Her life's purpose is to be a stay at home wife, and mother for her family.

Now with all that said, we know that to get in to a 4 year college today one has to take an SAT exam.  While they are not fun, and down right scary, it is a necessary evil of 4 year institutions.  Rather than have my daughter wait to take this exam when she's ready to attend college, we figure it's best to get it out of the way now.  So, how does one prepare for this exam?

We found a great website to help with learning -  SAT Question of the day.  We both signed up to receive an email each day with a different test question.

Appliances!  Either they love you or they hate you - either way they seem to all die on the same day.

Recently, we lost our beloved blender and mixer within the same week.  Sorry to say, the first to go was the mixer.  While making our scrumptious wheat bread, we began to smell smoke.  While we didn't see any smoke coming from the machine, I was warned by my dear husband that it might spark back into the wall socket causing a house fire.  Needless to say, I wasn't willing to part with my house full of memories yet, so we gave it a proper burial later that afternoon after it cooled down.

Next to go, later in the same week was our blender.  My Little Woman was making fruit smoothies for everyone for snack time and we began to hear a funny WHRR, WHRR, WHRR sound.  While there was not a smoke smell, nor electrical sparks flying, we decided, the blender had seen better days.

So, now for the last month we have been blenderless and mixerless, all the while hand mixing fruit smoothies and hand-kneading our bread.  One thing for certain, we all have some incredible arm muscles!

Diaper rash seems to go hand in hand in this house, like peanut butter and jelly, ink pens and doodling on ultra suede desk chairs, lip gloss and stained towels or walls, finger nail polish and new clothes (that is polish ON the new clothes), and toilet paper - here today, gone tomorrow (6 girls can eliminate quite a few rolls)!

My favorite all time diaper rash ointment was introduced to us while we were stationed in Louisiana.  Even though we use cloth diapers, I still have an occasional bout of diaper rash with each of them.  It usually occurs around tooth time!  This paste has the most unusual name, but it is highly effective!

Boudreaux's Butt Paste

After just one application their little toushies are clear and rash free again.
