Waiting for Spring Gardening...I hope!

When we lived in CA we created a wonderful vegetable garden. It even had a cute garden fence we built ourselves. I beleive we had to roto till 3 different times in order to remove all the rocks by hand and then two more times to add ammendments to our sandy soil. It was a great producer! Then we decided to move to KY! I looked forward to the wonderful rich soil that I remember in my granny's garden! What we got was clay on top of shale. Ugh! Last year I planned to have some containers and the late freeze and drought just took it's toll. I am more determined than ever this year! I have checked out a number of gardening books from the library and am currently reading "Square Foot Gardening". I am beginning to believe that I need raised beds. I am a pretty novice gardener and am trying to spend the cold winter days planning for spring! Or maybe it's just dreaming of spring. We have little space for a garden and want to maximize our return. I am praying this year will be much more productive than last year. If any of you have any tips, ideas or suggestions they would be greatly appreciated. Let me know what your garden plans are! I would love to get even more inspiration!
