Beekeeper Dreams

December 14, 2006 - My Battle with Sugar

Posted in Nutrition

I admit it - I love sweets!  When I was a little girl, I would sneak into the kitchen and lick my index finger and stick it deep into the sugar bowl to coat my finger with the white stuff and quickly run out of the kitchen with my sugared finger in my mouth ~ anybody else out there do that?  I can remember as young as four years old having coffee with breakfast - except it was mostly milk and sugar for the longest.

Needless to say - I have developed a long, long time of sugar intake and it has become a love-hate relationship.

I've long known the dark side of sugar and have pushed to the back of mind my need to curtail my intake - if not forego the white stuff altogether.  It's difficult at best, barring any immediate medical reasons to do so - I had no idea until recently just how bad sugar is for our health and well being.  HERE is an article that a friend shared with me.  Since reading it, I have been more dedicated to eliminating white sugar from my diet and I can already see many changes and differences.

I mentioned in my very first Beekeeper Dream post that I have been using honey in my coffee rather than sugar and it is wonderful!  Initially, I had headaches - much like those when someone is trying to decaffienate (notice I said "someone" - but not me....).  But after about a week, the headaches were gone and I am sleeping better at night.  Most recently I have noticed that I don't have hunger pangs like I used to and THAT is a great thing for a "grazer" like me.  It is amazing the amount of sugar that is in the foods we buy and consume - scary is more like it.

Honey is an excellent source of sweetness and is all natural.  It begins in the basin of a flowering bloom in the form of nectar, is gathered by one of God's most instinctive creatures who stores it and cures it for nourishment.  Nothing more is added or taken away.

All things in moderation has a great life application in today's modern life.  However, the things we don't know about can hurt us and we must be vigilant about the choices we make about the food and nourishment we introduce and ingest into our bodies.  We only have one body for this life - it is our living temple - and we must take great care and pride in caring for it.

Honey Bee Blessings,

Harriette

Hi, Harriette, been reading your beekeeper dreams for a while now. I'm with you on the honey - and we try to buy local honey because it's supposed to help with allergies and whatnot. I put it in tea, as I don't like coffee. -Chris
