We moved from Kentucky to Alaska in Oct 06. We recently found our new Little Slice of Heaven and are starting from the raw ground up. I'm slowly becoming a true Alaskan woman. I'm no longer a Cheechako, but I'm sure not a Sourdough yet. Join me as we finally start living the dream, Alaska-style.
We are in full-on break up already! That is just unheard of this early. This time last year was still dead of winter. Right now it is 9:30 AM and its already 38 degrees! Even on the Iditarod trail they are having problems with it being too warm. One musher said "Its like Hawaii!"
So, how can you tell when its break-up?
You slide at the intersection, but not because of ice; you are hydroplaning!
You have to drive with your windshield wipers on....and the sun is shining
Its time to take off the snow tires and put on pontoons.
You carry oars instead of shovels for emergencies.
All vehicles are a lovely shade of mud.
Lakes form in the middle of the streets.
We send our white dog outside, and she comes back in a black dog.
The ruts and potholes are really just holes in the ice.
Rain boots are hot commodities...even though it isn't raining
There is a green patch in the middle of the snow in the yard...is that?..could it be? GRASS!
This is ridiculously early for us, but I'm starting to get Spring Fever!!!
Your definition of spring break-up is too funny. Spring fever is hitting around here too. The yard is half green now, and then there are all of those maple trees just gushing sap into dad's buckets! Not to mention, the scent of the cooking fire, especially when it migrates into the house on a small child's clothing and body ;-) Bring on the nicer weather, and soon!
