• 2008-Jul-18 - This up coming week & windows

Posted By m j

This up coming week  I am going to try to get 3 rooms all cleaned out.  I need to go through every thing and find a new home for the items we do not use any more.   I am going to start in the kitchen and then move to the family room and the girls bathroom last.   I also want to go through the garage and start un-packing some of the boxes.  Most of the item will be going to a new home.  I have sooo many boxes of homeschooling books and item that I did not use or will not use again, I will be selling them on ebay.  I am giving my self a month to empty out our small rented storage unit and keep what is needed and find a new home for the rest.  On the farm/ranch we have a huge storage unit that we keep our tack and supplies in.  I have filled it up half way with item we no longer use or need, they will be sold at a huge yard sell once I have it filled with sale items.   I will let you all know when I will list all the home school books and stuff on ebay.

We ordered new windows for the house!  We are soo excited!!!  We have been wanting to get them for years but always did some other project instead.   But this year we did it.  They will be here in 3-4 weeks.  The house will be sooo much cooler and then the air will not be on 24 hours a day.   I will take pictures after they are in.

Today was the last day of vbs.  I had so much fun teaching this week. We had sooo many kids give their hearts to the Lord, it was amazing. I can't wait until Christmas vbs!

God Bless, mj

Why haven't I put  an entry in a long time? Well because I have been SUPER BUSY lately. Well on June 25-29 we went camping It was so fun. We went on a mammoth cave tour (Which was awesome).  W e also went swimming and I went horseback riding. We cooked all our food over the fire which was cool, and OF COURSE WE MADE SMORES YUUUUMMMM. Then on the 4th of July we went to see fireworks at our civic center. We also got a dog it is a full breed lab he is 8 weeks chocolate brown with blue eyes, and we named him Solomon. We also have been busy because we are moving to a little house in Macon county. We are going to live there until we get our cabin built on it. I am happy because the library is right next to the little house. It is a cute very very small town that we are moving to. We have been packing and cleaning alot. Until we write again.

• 2008-Jul-18 - Rumors of my demise are greatly exaggerated

Posted By Sugar Bend Farms
Yes, I realize it has been a while since I posted...But life has been happening. I have been working a lot and when I am home, I am to exhausted to think. Today is my day off this week and well, I am still to tired to think to much about this post. So I just wanted to post something to let anyone who is still reading this know that I am still alive and kicking! Just not kicking so high as of late. This having to get up and go to work everyday thing is crazy! I can't imagine why anyone would want to do it!

On the home front: Kiddo's are doing good. Lauren has a couple of photo shoots coming up. Megan is as usual, being very entrepreneurial. And Noah, little mister Noah, has been growing and expanding his vocabulary and his imagination by leaps and bounds! Andrew started a new project and the drive is much shorter than before, so our gas bill should drop. That is a great thing! As I said earlier, I am working...I have another week and then I will go back to the usual schedule. I will be so happy to go back to one day a week...I think I will celebrate.

We are still trying to plan a vacation. And Andrew and I are trying to plan an anniversary trip and then we are planning to take Noah to see Thomas the Tank Engine when it comes nearby. So the summer is just getting going for us. When most people are wrapping up theirs and going back to school, we will be getting our fun started.

Camp Meeting is starting the first weekend of August, so we will be busy with that for several days. Several people we know from Louisiana are coming up for that, so we will get to visit with old friends.

Of course birthdays are also near. Andrew and Lauren in early August and Noah in September and then I will turn the big 42 in November. Oh I can't forget Daphne's wedding in October, so we will be making a trip to Louisiana.

Whew! I am sure there is something else, but right now, I can't think of what...

Anyway, just to let you know, I am still here and do have more to say, but this is my one day off and I need to catch up on the laundry, dishes, floors, toilets, tubs..................well you know the routine.

I will leave you with a quote, well other than the one in the title.
I am back...I decided to leave you with a poem instead. Several years ago I discovered Billy Collins. He was the US poet Laureate from 2001 to 2003. It was during that time that I found some of his work in the library where I worked. I loved his wit and the way he thought. It reminded me of some of the quirky thoughts I have. Only his are much more articulated than my own. Which explains why he was Poet Laureate and well I am not!!

Anyway, this poem is one of my favorites of his, it is so very true. I have reached the age where this really reminds me of my own battle with trying to remember things. I hope you enjoy it.

Forgetfulness

The name of the author is the first to go
followed obediently by the title, the plot,
the heartbreaking conclusion, the entire novel
which suddenly becomes one you have never read,
never even heard of,
as if, one by one, the memories you used to harbor
decided to retire to the southern hemisphere of the brain,
to a little fishing village where there are no phones.
Long ago you kissed the names of the nine Muses goodbye
and watched the quadratic equation pack its bag,
and even now as you memorize the order of the planets,
something else is slipping away, a state flower perhaps,
the address of an uncle, the capital of Paraguay.
Whatever it is you are struggling to remember,
it is not poised on the tip of your tongue,
not even lurking in some obscure corner of your spleen.
It has floated away down a dark mythological river
whose name begins with an L as far as you can recall,
well on your own way to oblivion where you will join those
who have even forgotten how to swim and how to ride a bicycle.
No wonder you rise in the middle of the night
to look up the date of a famous battle in a book on war.
No wonder the moon in the window seems to have drifted
out of a love poem that you used to know by heart.
~Billy Collins~

• Friday, July 18, 2008 - Part II: Sweet Home Alabama

Posted By Miss Jocelyn Dixon

As promised I shall now resume my posts on our two-week vacation to the Southern States of the US. We had already visited Georgia and now we were on our way to Sweet Home Alabama. The view was pretty as it was much like Indiana in the weather and scenery, and we got to see lots of cows, goats, and sheep. Mother Dear took plenty of photos, though most were blurry because it’s kind of hard to focus the camera as you’re driving by at 60 miles an hour. There were a few good ones that you could tell were cows and not black spots. Most of the goats were Boer goats, which maybe my 3rd favourite breed of goat. Not sure if I like Nigerians or Boers better.

Anyways, it was supposed to take four hours from Brooke’s to our stop in Alabama but it took the Dixon Crew  six, and right as we were getting towards the end, we got lost. We’d missed a turn, probably because it was so late and almost completely dark. We pulled into a cemetery to look at our map and directions, when Mrs. Lirette called and asked where we were. As I was telling her a face appeared out of the darkness in my window (and scared the snot out of me!). Then I heard a tapping on my window so I rolled it down, leery of it was. However, there was nothing to fear. It was three policemen, who saw our big white van pull into the cemetery and wonder what we were doing. They were very accommodating and kind, and gave us directions as well their card if we got lost again. Alabama police are quite pleasant.

After they took their leave, we pulled out of the cemetery and not five minutes later we arrived at the Lirette’s, who some of you may have heard of because of the death of Mr. Lirette back in May. Stopping at their house was escpecially close to our hearts and it was a pleasure to meet them. I’ve been blogging with Sarah (the birthday girl!) for almost a year and recently with her sisters, Jordan Lee, Celeste, and Sandy, and then mother, Mrs. Lirette. They were all the sweetest and kindest hostess. When we got there Mrs. Lirette came out and welcomed us with big hugs. We were thrilled.

They had all cooked us an authentic Cajun meal, which was excellent, with shrimp, fried breaded-potatoes,  rice with beans on top. It was so very delightful and I was so hungry! During dinner they shared some precious stories with us and then in the morning cooked us a most excellent meal. When we had finished breakfast Sarah and Jordan went to us their rooms. I had fun taken photos of all the neat things, especially the Roy Rogers apron and photographs Sarah had on her wall. One was signed… perhaps by him. I must convince her to find out! Then they took us outside to show us the swing and we had fun on it… yes, Sarah and I both got on it. Haha They are happyily situated on their homestead, surrounded by fields.I love the countryside… any countryside.

When the time came for us to leave I was in such dismay, even though I knew we would be leaving.  I wanted to stay and fellowship with them, but God has it all in His plan and hopefully we will be able to meet again soon. I’m glad to have gotten to travel and stay in Alabama. Very pretty state. I can see what some people call it Sweet Home Alabama.

Blessings!

• 2008-Jul-17 - ATTENTION OHIO HOMESCHOOLERS!!! OHIO LAW IN JEOPARDY!!

Posted By Kim Wolf<>< in Homeschooling

Ohio homeschool law is up for review!!  PLEASE read the notice below and PLEASE go to the website given!!!  This is SO IMPORTANT!!!  We face the possibility of losing the law we have enjoyed since 1989!!!   KW<><

July 17, 2008

Ohio--Urgent--Your Help is Needed to Stop
Revisions of the Homeschool Regulations!

Dear HSLDA Members and Friends,

If Ohio homeschoolers do not act, they may face stricter homeschool
regulations.

For the first time in nearly 20 years, the Ohio Department of
Education (ODE) has initiated a formal review process of the home
education rules in the Ohio Administrative Code Section 3301-34.  It
is imperative that every Ohio resident who is concerned about
homeschooling freedom register his or her opinion regarding proposed
changes.  The comment period is now open and will last only until
August 8.

Ohio law dictates that the ODE review regulations every 5 years to
determine what changes, if any, should be made.  O.A.C. 3301-34 was
enacted in 1989, and until now, the ODE has not found any revisions to
be necessary during the 5-year review.  Even though the regulations
have worked very well for the past 19 years, the ODE has decided that
this time, changes are warranted.

The most important message Ohio residents can convey to the ODE is
that the regulations do not need to change.  If enough people support
the current regulations, we may be able to stop the revision process
before it begins.

ACTION NEEDED

1. Go to
http://www.hslda.org/elink.asp?id=5316 and register your
comments about the ODE's intent to change O.A.C. 3301-34.  The
deadline to comment is August 8.

2. Forward this message to others.  Anyone who is a "stakeholder" may
register comments.  This means that if you homeschool in Ohio, have
previously homeschooled in Ohio, are considering homeschooling in
Ohio, or have a family member or friend who is homeschooling in Ohio,
you may comment to the ODE.

3. It is important to comment in your own words--please do not simply
copy and paste someone else's message.  If your message is not
original, it is possible that it will not be counted as an individual
response.

Ohio homeschool leaders are also closely monitoring this situation.
For more information on the review process, please visit
http://ohiohsalert.org/ .

Sincerely,

Michael P. Donnelly, Esq.

• Thursday, July 17, 2008 - Dearest Miss Sarah

Posted By Miss Jocelyn Dixon

Dearest Miss Sarah,

I write to you with all sincerity and love. I think very dearly of you and your family. God has placed you in my path so that I might be a friend and an encouragement to you. I am thankful for the task. Today you’re eighteen and what a beautiful, smart and sweet young lady you are and what a blessed Woman of God you will continue to grow into. God has a some man prepared for you and I know you will bless him beyond measure as your Momma did.

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/sillydreamer91/post%20photos/sarah.jpgI am so honoured to call you friend and to even more honoured to have been able to meet you and your dear family in real life. I pray that very soon our paths shall cross again, but until they do I will continue to visit your blog each to see what’s new with you and leave you comments letting you know I was thinking about you.

Remember, dear Sarah, that your life will not be easy. It will try your very soul, but have absolutely no fear because your Creator is right beside you as He’s always been and always will be. When you feel lost and alone just remember to let the Spirit remind you that He will never forsake you and loves you as He loves his own Son. Read His Word, talk to Him, and remember to count the blessings He sends you. He send those little blessings to remind us that He is God and He is in control.

On the occasion of your dear birth I had wanted to do something extra special for you. I was thinking so hard and in all my worry I had not the brains to think to send you an actual card. Indeed I am a airy-girl, but at least I can still wish you a happy birthday and pray that the Lord continues to give you strength to face the every new day.

Love you Sweetie!

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/sillydreamer91/sigs/mjhsb2.png

I invite all of you to attend her party and wish Miss Sarah a “happy birthday” for yourself!

• 2008-Jul-14 - Vbs & Chicks

Posted By m j

I am teaching 2nd grade this week at our churches vbs.  It is a blast!  They are so much fun.  Today we were teaching about being thankful.  I told the story of the leper's and Jesus.  To make it more real to them I put spotted stickers on them and quarantined them with caution tape.   When I pretended I was Jesus and healed them I waited to see if any one said thank you.  Only 2 did out of the 4 classes I taught.  So then we talked about being thankful.

We had 16 chicks hatch and 3 have been killed by some thing so we brought them in the house.  At this moment I have 13 chicks running around my kitchen.  We have a hen on a nest due to hatch any day and Sweet Pea a goose sitting on a egg due to hatch in a few days also.

It did no good telling the girls to not let the hens make a nest, we are trying to cut down on the animals!  We were down to like 30ish birds from 80, now they added more!!!   I must night speak good english.

God Bless all,  mj

• Monday, July 14, 2008 - Tote & Tee Giveaway!

Posted By Miss Jocelyn Dixon

I do believe it’s time for another giveaway at A Pondering Heart, don’t you? I’m mean it’s been nearly two months since my last one and I do enjoy hosting giveaways! I hope you’ll take part in this one. The prize is really neat…

I found this site called Nifty Tees From Tote & Tee and thought it was really neat. They sell “totes & tees” in which you can get different styles. Plus they have other items such as hoodies, tights, socks, and more! The really neat thing about it is you can get your initial on the front of the products. They have different fabric patterns for the letters. The only problem is that the sizes only go up to 12! Drat, just a wee bit too small for me, but they do have styles for both Him & Her.

Miss Hannah was able to receive a complimentary tee from T&T and it’s so adorable. I picked it for her as a surprise and she just loves it! It’s a green tee with the letter H for Hannah. I love the fabric pattern the H is done in. Very cute!

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/sillydreamer91/family/htt2.png

http://i301.photobucket.com/albums/nn63/sillydreamer91/family/htt3.png

About Tote & Tee:

“Tote and Tee has been a work in progress since it started in September of 2003.  After the birth of her 2nd daughter, designer Amy Trusler was inspired to get back behind the sewing machine.  It started with one tee and they kept selling and she just kept making them!  Amy enjoys making fun, wearable tees that kids and parents will love.  All tees are made by Amy in her home based studio.  Running her own business, being a mom and doing all things creative are what make her happy!”

Prize:

Mrs. Trusler donated a shirt from T&T to giveaway and the winner will be able to choose which style, size, and initial they’d like! So who wants to enter?

Participating Rules:

1) leave a comment telling me which item you like best from Tote & Tee.

2) put the icon on your blog (code is on my right sidebar)

You can announce it on your blog, including my link and a link to T&T, to be entered 2x (you must leave me the link). After you’ve left a comment and been entered 2x for announcing it on your blog, you’re welcome to post elsewhere to be entered again.

The giveaway will end at midnight on Friday, July 25th, 2008, and the winner will be emailed the following Monday.

Blessings!
