Let's see...My past week or so has been filled with picking & preserving the bounty from our garden. My mom came for a visit over the weekend & this morning we all met at a restaurant for breakfast to wish them a safe trip. I'll probably not see them again for a couple of months. It's a bit strange not seeing her anytime I want. We still talk on the phone alot, so it doesn't seem like we loose touch, so that is good. While she was here I showed her some of the things we'll be using for school in August. We've checked out a couple of properties, but none that just really seem right for us. I'll never give up hope though! I've gotten lots of food put up: whole kernel corn, tomatoes & ro-tel are what we've done most of lately. It's alot of work & time but with food prices these days it will really pay off. The food prices are actually getting me worried lately. Some things have jumped so much it's ridiculous. I have been looking into buying a grain mill. I've wanted to do this for some time but did not know where to purchase the wheat berries. Well, I've found that the health food store is now carring them. You buy it by the pound. --To those of you who buy this already, what is a normal price? I've gotten my old clothes on & I'm about to get started in the canning game for the day! Rotel is on the menu! Hope you have a great Sunday! |

We ended up not being able to go camping. We did go drive up to the mountains on Friday to swim though. We had a wonderful time. We swam all morning & then had a picnic. On the way home we passed a mini-golf place so we stopped & played a game. We did not stay because it called for rain on Sat & Sun. Good thing too because we checked the weather on Saturday evening & it said there were flash floods in the area we would have been in! On Saturday we did garden & housework. We freezer packed many bags of squash & zucchini. I also made a batch of peach jam. We also made a trip to the feed store. Chicken feed (layer) has risen up to about $13 a bag now!--Those chickens better keep laying or else! Sunday I finally finished cleaning & organizing our school house. I also pulled everything out of our pantries and got that in order. Boy did I have a mess for a while, but it looks really great now! I wish I would have taken before & after photos to share.---well, maybe not! LOL Today we will make a run into the library to swap things out and then come back home & do some baking & finish up laundry. I need to make some sandwich rolls & something sweet for hubby's lunches this week. That about wraps up our day! Since it's Monday, here's the menu: Mon: Lemon chicken, noodles, squash Tues: Vegetable soup, cornbread Wed: Fish, fries, beans Thurs: Chicken & rice casserole, peas Fri: 4th of July--BBQ ribs & trimmings |

It may sound strange, but while in a way it seems we've been together forever, it also seems like it's not been that long. We have plans to go out to dinner just the two of us. --We rarely do this but I think once a year is the rule somewhere...isn't it??? LOL He had to work late today, but he should be here in about 20 minutes. I have been ready for a while so after he takes a quick shower, we'll be on our way! ~God bless! |

Good morning, fellow homesteaders! We have been spending the past week fixing up an old pop-up camper. (It was my mother-in-laws & has sat unopened for about 3 years now) She bought a big brand new 5th wheel so she had no need for this one. She said if we wanted it to come get it....So we did. It did need some things fixed, and it definately could use some paint, but I think it will be alright. We bought a new air conditioner for it (we're in LA so believe me, it's a necessity for the summer camp trips) The men built a new table, replaiced the wall where the air conditioner goes & rebuilt the sink/stove counter. Our job today is to get the kirby and go vaccum the cushions. They are not in bad shape, but they have set for so long. I looked into getting new foam for them, but it is extreemly high so we'll vaccum & then use sheets for covers. When we go camping we're not in the camper/tent much anyway. The only thing about where we like to go is there are lots of raccoons. So it will be nice to be up high. My husband will find out today if he has to work Friday. If not, we'll head out early Friday morning! This will mean this afternoon we'll need to make a list & go get supplies tomorrow. The majority of our day will be spent here. It's Wednesday so today we change all of the bed linens. Other than that we'll get started on a read aloud I think the children will like. "Joni" I read it as a child & I remember really getting into the book. Hope everyone has a wonderful day. |

Sunday: Fish, fries, hushpuppies, cucumber salad Monday: Hamburger rice casserole, squash, salad Tuesday: Soft tacos, beans Wednesday: Quiche, tomato salad, cantaloupe Thursday: Crockpot chicken, baked potatoes, peas Friday: Chicken salad sandwiches, chips, fruit Saturday: Pinto casserole & salad Hamburger rice casserole 1 cup rice 2 cups water 1/2 onion OR about 3 green onions 1lb (could use 1/2 if in a pinch) hamburger 1 can cream of mushroom soup 1 cup hot water w/2 tsp beef bullion dissolved. Cook rice in 2 cups water until done. While that is cooking, in a separate skillet cook burger, onion, garlic & salt & pepper until browned. Drain fat, if needed. This morning started out well with a nice phone call with my mother. I decided since the men folk were gone fishing I'd get some cooking done. I got everything out to start the bread dough & went to get the sugar canister down & then.............poof!!! The sugar, kept atop our pantry, came crashing down on me & the floor. It would seem that someone did not put the lid on properly so when I grabbed it down the lid flew off and the canister, of course, landed upside down. Sugar went flying all over the kitchen floor, behind the pantry, and all over & behind the trash can! I did get the bread going in the machine & I have a pot of pintos in the crockpot so this is good. Here is my list for today...so far: ~Make bread...was going to be a big baking day, but....no more sugar & I'm out of splenda (you know the stuff that's worth it's weight in gold according to the price) ~ ~Make tortillas ~Make freezer burritos ~ ~Go to library & swap things out ~ ~Change cat litter ~empty all trash ~get things ready to put on ebay ~Work on schoolhouse (didn't get to this yesterday) If hubby wants we may go shopping to start getting things ready for our camping trip. We hope to go next weekend! |

We've been getting alot done around the homestead this week. The yardwork is, pretty much done...it seems to never end, but it looks nice! Yesterday the children & I went about 30 minutes away & picked blueberries. I said we would each pick one bucket full & it turned out to be about 17 lbs. After a quick trip to pick up some ingredients we came home. We did our daily duties & then made blueberry jam. I took pictures & will post them & the recipe when I have a little more time. It was very easy to make & it tastes super sweet, but great! I have been keeping a notebook/journal of things to do each day. I don't always get it all done, but I try & whatever does not get done will go over to the next day. Here's what's on my list for today: Thursday 6-19 ~
~Work on schoolhouse (inside organizing) ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~ ~
~pack & freeze other blueberries ~Put recipes in my binder (from when I cleaned out my magazines) ~Clean out end table in the living room (more magazines & papers) That's it except for the usual dishes & such that are always getting dirty! I've been keeping busy trying to organize all the homeschool things & getting our records & things organized. Right now we are taking this week off so I have some more time to do this. Hope everyone had a fun & productive day too! |

On this day 15 years ago, my husband & I were married. I was 18 and he was 19. Seems so very young now, but we have been dating since I was 16. We had our son 10 1/2 months later. Then Abigail came along 4 years after that.
After getting the broom out and sweeping it into a pile I looked for the dust pan.--Which is to be kept in the laundry room along side the broom. Well, do you think it was there??? Nope. So I swept it all out the back door. It is in a pile under the porch. I can say the ants will get a great treat today! Now I have the broom proped in the kitchen waiting for everytime I walk in the kitchen because it is such a treat to have little granules of sugar cling to your feet every time you walk through.
I do know who the culpret is. It is a little girl who got cereal last night & put sugar in it!
