Marathon training (yep!, I'm still at it!)My training has been going really well. In the last (almost) 2 weeks, I have only missed one run and that was due to being up too late doing homework, not because of laziness. We have run a total of 16.4 miles so far, and we average about 1.5 miles per day. We are up to running 3 minutes straight with 2 minutes of walking between each run. We've added crunches and "wall-sits" this week to help strengthen our core muscles and legs. We're starting with 40 crunches and 30 seconds of wall-sitting. When I was in track and at my fittest, I was able to do 380 crunches and hold a wall-sit for almost 5 minutes. That's my goal eventually. We'll get there! I haven't weighed myself in about a week, so I don't know where I'm at, but I did lose 3 pounds the first week of running. I'm training to run a marathon... seriously!I ran track in Jr. High and High School and I loved it, but I haven't run since. I've been thinking for awhile that I'd like to get back into running again and a few days ago, I made my decision. I'm going to do it! I have several reasons for my decision. First being that I miss running. It is such a stress reliever and there is nothing like running a trail and being completely lost in thought. Second, I am seriously out of shape and very over weight. My health has gone a bit south as well. I want to be fit and healthy again. Third, I want to. Is that a good reason? I keep picturing myself finishing that first big race. It will be a great accomplishment and I want that satisfaction. My goals are to run a 5k this fall and then a half marathon next spring and then a full marathon in fall 2009. Because I am so out of shape, I am starting really slowly. This first week, I'm following this plan: walk 10 minutes, run one minute, walk one minute, run one, walk one... until I've done 10 sets. Then I cool down walk for 5 minutes. After 2 days, I have zero pain and I was able to talk through all the runs. I did get a small side stitch, but it lasted only a minute. After Saturday, I'm moving my training plan up a notch. |
