Tonight I made Local Soup! The beef, chicken, carrots, onions, potatos, tomatos, corn, green beans, collards, zuchinni, yellow squash, basil, hot banana peppers and okra were all within 100 miles. Most within 40 miles and some from my back yard! Here is the rundown on the second and third tier of my buying plan. The garlic is from Orlando(Go figure) the peanut oil from Louisianna, the salt is from Utah(I use Real Salt)the pepper stated that it is made in the USA. However, I have serious doubts as to the accuracy of that claim. I expect to find that the peppercorns were crushed into powder and manufactured in the US. Black pepper is usally grown in such interesting places as India and Viet Nam. I am researching whether it can grow in our zone. If so, perhaps I will add some plants to my victory garden! I am planning to try my hand at growing green tea. It will be a long time until harvest. Three long years without green tea........... I don't intend to knowingly consume anything from China. I have been doing research today and well....I like my life and would like to keep it. I have absolutely nothing against the Chinese farmers. There are just too many "incidents" for my comfort. I am actually in contact with a small sustainable farm in Hawaii. She will call me as soon as they have enough green tea to sell outside Hawaii. Until then..... alas....I will miss my addiction. Does anyone have any ideas about how I could sip some safe caffeine in the morning. :) It can not contain sugar or artificial sweetner. I am drinking black coffee right now but, of course can't find any local coffee. I am looking for a good brand that is fair trade certified and preferably organic and not cost prohibitive. Eutopia Right? The dogs even got in on the local act tonight. For some reason, hitherto unknown to me, they are refusing dry dog food. I don't just mean Ole Roy either. I mean they are refusing ALL dry dog food. They will eat any brand of canned food but will not even smell the dry feed. I have tried many brands, the latest of which is Gravy Train. So, I decided that maybe after tasting my homemade bread scraps they have begun to recognize REAL food. I gave them local beef bones, broth, and meat. I cooked some local bread tonight that is especially for them. I used fresh ground corn, fresh ground wheat and fresh ground oats. I put eggs, salt and coconut oil. I used an iron skillet and made it without a leavening agent. It was quite tasty. When a friend called me and asked what I was doing, I had to truthfully answer, "eating dog food". The kind I cooked. :) Of course, since I do not currently reside in the tropics the coconut oil is imported from who knows where. I bought this particular jar a long time ago before the local plan occured to me and thought dog food would be a good place to use it. It is very healthy and maybe it will give the dogs a little boost since it is still hotter than blue blazes here. The blue blazes are not as hot as they were a couple of weeks ago. I am not complaining since most of you who know me are very well aware of the fact that summer is my very favorite season. I dislike the cold. I feel myself waking up in the spring when it begins to warm up. In the winter when I sit outside, I actually move my chair with the sun in much the same way as my animals! They usually don't sit in chairs but they lie around on the ground where ever the sun happens to be shining. Interestingly enough, they follow the shade in the summer! I still pretty much stay in the sun even when it is hot! I have been eating fresh peaches all week and tommorrow I will make a peach cobbler.(God willing) It is wonderful to eat with the seasons. Everything tastes so much better. |
