    A great Website I found for land

    We just purchased some land from Ozarkland.com for our future homestead. They are great folks and the prices are very reasonable. They finance the price of the land and the monthly payments are very low. If you've been searching for rural land in Missouri or Arkansas they are definately worth looking into! I've added their link here: Ozarkland.com- Woods and Waters Realty

    Growing and Using Herbs

    In my search for more information on herbs this is some of the information I have found on growing your own healing herbs since certain herbs are in short supply.

    There are thousands upon thousands of herbs you can grow - many would be classified by some as weeds, and many would grow naturally in your area.

    You need to do some research. The herbs you are likely to need are not necessarily those that everyone else might need. Look at your health history, and that of your family, and then find out what herbs are used to treat those conditions. Then find out if the climatic conditions where you live will suit any of them. From there, look into how you'd harvest, prepare and store them in usable quantities.

    If you are already on conventional medications, speak with your doctor about replacing or supplementing them with the herbs. Find out which ones interfere with each other (drug/herb; herb/herb), and which ones are contraindicated for certain conditions, and any warnings about them you should be aware of.

    Then look into herbal First Aid Kits, and find out what's in them, and work out your own list. Like conventional drugs, herbal preparations do not always have a long shelf-life (except tinctures and essential oils).

    Here's a sample First Aid Kit. Some of the herbs you can grow, some are easier to buy commercially. You might need to tidy it up a bit - the original is a MS Word table that doesn't translate well here (3 columns - Herb, Mainly Used For, Form Used:

    Agrimony Diarrhea. Sore throat. Cystitis. Infusion.
    Aloe Vera Burns including sunburn. Wounds. Fresh leaf gel, or cream
    Arnica Bruises. Sprains Make up into a cream as required
    Bach Flower Rescue Remedy Quells anxiety and nervousness. Place 4 drops in drinking water as needed throughout the day.
    Blackberry leaves Diarrhoea. Infusion.
    Black Cohosh Pain associated with menstruation. Tincture.
    Calendula Minor wounds. Rashes. Burns. Tinea. As in infusion, or in a cream.
    Chamomile Restless or teething babies and children. Rashes. Burns. Sore eyes. Infusion. Cream or lotion.
    Clove oil Toothache Applied direct. Whole cloves can also be used.
    Comfrey Sprains. Wounds. Skin problems. Fresh leaf poultice. Cream.
    Cramp Bark Menstrual pain. Muscle cramp or spasms. Decoction or cream.
    Dandelion Fluid retention. Warts. Infusion. Sap of fresh plants for warts.
    Echinacea Improve immune system Tablets or capsules.
    Elderflower Hay fever. Colds, flu. Infusion. Elderberry syrup may also be used.
    Eucalyptus oil Colds, flu Inhalation.
    Evening Primrose oil Premenstrual syndrome. Hangover. Eczema. Capsules.
    Fennel seeds Colic in babies. Indigestion. Infusion. (Dill, Caraway or Aniseed can be substituted.)
    Feverfew Headache. Rheumatic pain. Fresh or dried leaf, infusion
    Figs Laxative Fresh or dried fruit, or syrup
    Garlic Antiseptic. Colds, flu. Wounds. Earache. Food poisoning. Fresh bulbs or tablets. Juice for earache.
    Ginger Nausea. Colds and flu. Menstrual pain. Fresh or powdered root. Infusion
    Goldenseal ‘Traveller’s Diarrhoea’. Use with Echinacea for colds and flu. Tincture.
    Lavender oil or flowers Antiseptic. Wounds. Minor burns. Bites and stings. Headache. Relaxant. Use externally only. An infusion of fresh or dried flowers can also be used.
    Lemon Balm Insomnia. Bites, stings. Infusion. Fresh leaf for bites and stings.
    Liquorice root Colds and flu. Menopausal symptoms. Sore throat. Infusion.
    Marshmallow Boils. Splinters. Sore thoat. Decoction.
    Mint Shock. Indigestion Infusion
    Rosemary leaves Headaches. Pick-me-up. Infusion.
    Slippery Elm Sore throats. Coughs. Diarrhoea. Lozenges.
    St John’s Wort Burns. Earache. Mild Depression.
    Haemorrhoids. Infusion.
    Salve.
    Tea Tree oil Tinea. Wounds. Cold sores. Use externally only.
    Thyme Chest congestion. Worms. Infusion
    Valerian Anxiety. Insomnia. Muscle spasms. Decoction or capsules

    Also do some homework about the medicinal uses of common culinary herbs - some are mentioned above, and most have medicinal uses. Things like echinacea and evening primrose and calendula are easily grown in most gardens, but to be useful you need quite a lot of each! Even roses are herbs, and if you think of the health benefits of fruits and vegetables, you're probably already well on the way to having a medicinal garden! Look up 'medicinal uses potato (or tomato or carrot or apple or lemon)', for instance! Be prepared to be astonished at just how useful they can be.

    Here is a link to a plant database that you may find very useful. It has over 7,000 medicinal plants listed in it with information about medicinal uses and growing, harvesting, preparing, etc. Medicinal Plants Database

    As I have learned about different herbs I find out if they grow in my gardening zone. Your name doesn't state your gardening zone so I don't know how hot/cold your get there. Then I scout around and find seeds/starts and give it a try. So far part of the list I grow includes comfrey, marshmallow, roses,calendula, rose hips, echnacea,thyme, clary sage, yarrow, mint and the list goes on. It is fun to find the plants/seeds and then try to grow them. You also need to know when to harvest what part of the herb you want. I have some seeds of some herbs available for possible sell/trade/barter if you are interested. Just send me a p.m. if you are. Pinetree seed Co. has many herb seeds for sale and they have been great to deal with. Most seed catalogs have at least a small section of herb seeds and if you look around on e-bay there are LOtS there as well. Thereare several excellent resource books for more information on Herbalism. I have listed them below:

    A Neat Website!

    I found this website a few weeks ago and have really found it to be useful.  I have always wished that I could trade in my kids nice clothes that they've outgrown for new ones that fit and this site has made that a reality, and it was free :) The website is http://www.kizoodle.com and if you use the code UGJ94A they give you a couple extra points to start off with. I found it really neat and since I'm always looking for new ways to be frugal it's great! I took the below description from their website to help explain it, since I'm terrible at explaining things :)

    Kizoodle is a new (and totally free!) community website developed specifically for parents and parent groups. Kizoodle provides many features and functions to help parents:

    Socialize and share ideas, photos, and (soon!) video,

    Start or join groups and associations,

    Swap children’s and Mom stuff (In a unique way called Kizoodling),

    List “Best of the Best” resources of activities and places for parents customized for the area they live in.

    Kizoodle also supports existing Parent Groups by offering a complete website platform to design and facilitate all aspects of the Groups online presence and needs at no cost!

    Kizoodle is a growing and content rich environment that is essentially operated and regulated by YOU and all the parent members. The Kizoodle staff is always listening to you folks and are making changes as we go! Please give us your feedback: jamie@kizoodle.com (If your idea sounds like it will benefit the masses then we will likely add it!).

    Louisiana in the News

    This was on the news today here!

    BATON ROUGE, La. - Gov. Kathleen Blanco signed legislation Friday that penalizes doctors who perform a late-term abortion procedure, making Louisiana the first to outlaw the surgery since a similar federal ban was upheld this year.

    The new law allows the procedure only when the mother's life would be endangered without it. It would be a crime in all other cases, including when the pregnancy is expected to cause health problems for the mother.

    Under the Louisiana legislation, doctors face fines of between $1,000 and $10,000, and jail terms of between one and 10 years.

    About time someone banned this awful procedure!

    One of my favorite verses!

    O LORD, you have searched me
           and you know me.

     2 You know when I sit and when I rise;
           you perceive my thoughts from afar.

     3 You discern my going out and my lying down;
           you are familiar with all my ways.

     4 Before a word is on my tongue
           you know it completely, O LORD.

     5 You hem me in—behind and before;
           you have laid your hand upon me.

     6 Such knowledge is too wonderful for me,
           too lofty for me to attain.

     7 Where can I go from your Spirit?
           Where can I flee from your presence?

     8 If I go up to the heavens, you are there;
           if I make my bed in the depths, [a] you are there.

     9 If I rise on the wings of the dawn,
           if I settle on the far side of the sea,

     10 even there your hand will guide me,
           your right hand will hold me fast.

     11 If I say, "Surely the darkness will hide me
           and the light become night around me,"

     12 even the darkness will not be dark to you;
           the night will shine like the day,
           for darkness is as light to you.

     13 For you created my inmost being;
           you knit me together in my mother's womb.

     14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made;
           your works are wonderful,
           I know that full well.

     15 My frame was not hidden from you
           when I was made in the secret place.
           When I was woven together in the depths of the earth,

     16 your eyes saw my unformed body.
           All the days ordained for me
           were written in your book
           before one of them came to be.

     17 How precious to [b] me are your thoughts, O God!
           How vast is the sum of them!

     18 Were I to count them,
           they would outnumber the grains of sand.
           When I awake,
           I am still with you.

     19 If only you would slay the wicked, O God!
           Away from me, you bloodthirsty men!

     20 They speak of you with evil intent;
           your adversaries misuse your name.

     21 Do I not hate those who hate you, O LORD,
           and abhor those who rise up against you?

     22 I have nothing but hatred for them;
           I count them my enemies.

     23 Search me, O God, and know my heart;
           test me and know my anxious thoughts.

     24 See if there is any offensive way in me,
           and lead me in the way everlasting.

    Psalm 139

    Natural Remedies for Lice

    Natural Treatment for Head Lice

    The oils of anise and ylang ylang may be effective in naturally clearing infestations of head lice, or pediculosis.

    It is estimated that 10 to 12 million children in the United States are infested with head lice every year. The condition, which is easily spread from person to person, making it hard to eliminate, is characterized by an itchy scalp. Allergic reactions to the lice and bacterial infections brought on by excessive scratching can also occur.

    Commonly, head lice is treated with lotions and shampoos made from malathion, pyrethrins, permethrins, lindane and other insecticides. Not only do some of these insecticides cause minor rashes and skin irritations in some people, but many are also known to be toxic to the nervous system and the immune system. Repeated use increases their toxicity, and head lice can develop a resistance to the insecticides.

    In a study to determine other effective treatments for head lice, a natural spray containing anise, ylang ylang, and coconut oils was compared with a conventional spray containing permethrin and malathion. Researchers treated 119 Israeli school children with head lice with either the natural or conventional spray.

    Both treatments were equally effective, and head lice were eliminated in 92 percent of the group. An itchy scalp immediately following treatment was reported by one child in both the natural and conventional treatment groups, though no other side effects were noted.

    Anise and ylang ylang contain essential oils, which are generally antibacterial, antifungal, and insecticidal. These oils have long been known to have such effects; one related study found that the essential oil of an African plant, Lippia multiflora, was more effective against head and body lice than the conventional treatment.

    Few other studies have examined the use of essential oils for treating head lice, though the positive results studies from thus far could lead to more widespread use of essential oil for treating head lice.

    Israel Medical Association Journal October 2002;4(10):790-3

    Also I found this article for detangling long hair so it can be brushed out more effectively;

    Using a nit comb is much more effective if the fine-toothed comb pulls through the child's hair smoothly and quickly--virtually impossible with long, tangled hair.

    There is a solution to tangles: rinse with baking soda water (2 tbs./1 qt) after shampooing. No need to wash off the baking soda rinse.

    This info is based on personal experience with my own daughter's very long blond hair which was tangle-prone due to chlorine build-up from her daily swims. An experienced hair-dresser showed us the baking soda miracle.

    And, yes, she had lice on two different occasions. The teacher explained that lice are actually more commonly found on blond kids because the light-colored lice are less visible there.

    This info re sodium bicarbonate should be added to each of Dr. Mercola's articles on head lice. It will help will make treatment ever so much easier.

    Good luck and continued success to all of you who work with Dr. Mercola,

    An Article I ran across today on children and head lice-Please Read!

    The Dangers of Anti-Lice Head Shampoo

    Just in case you know any families with young children I am enclosing an excerpt of the following article. Just think of the sorrow that could be prevented.

    From Countryside Magazine Volume 85, No. 6 November/December 2001 "Homestead Health" Pages 64 & 65..........

    One mother found an issue of Chemical Engineering News which had an article on the phasing out of chlorinated hydrocarbons. Synthetic pyrethroids such as NIX were included in the chart along with different herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. The negative effects were many.

    This is a sad story, but it makes a point. . .

    In 1984 there was an outbreak of head lice in an elementary school. Several children were discovered to have head lice, including one woman's second son, Jesse (the woman wished to remain anonymous). The pediatrician prescribed Kwell shampoo never telling her anything other than the fact that it could cause eye or skin irritation. She used the Lindane shampoo on her family, sprayed the house, and had it exterminated. She had a refill of the Lindane and used it twice that first time on all of her children. She did all of the shampooing herself, without gloves. About two months later, she watched Jesse playing "Superman" as he jumped from the couch to the love seat. When he was in midair he caught himself in the stomach and appeared to be in a lot of pain. They took Jesse to the emergency room, and after being examined, the doctors told them that Jesse had an enlarged spleen. The doctors decided to do some blood work and found that his lymphocytes and white blood cell count was irregularly high.

    She had researched the possible diagnoses and knew his symptoms pointed to leukemia, acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Jesse was hospitalized for six weeks until he went into remission through chemotherapy.

    The doctors asked a lot of questions about their background. Had there been a history of leukemia? Was there chemical exposure? There were no questions about pesticides or treatments for head lice so she didn't make the connection. It never crossed her mind. Jesse responded well to chemotherapy. He was resilient and the entire family pulled for him. He was only two at the time. Eventually, things got back to normal as Jesse ingested chemotherapy orally once a week for three years. The doctors told them that if he relapsed it would happen within six months after coming off chemotherapy.

    They were excited to pass the six-month and then ninth-month marks. Prior to the start of that school year in 1987, she again shampooed all of the kids' hair with NIX. It was nine months after Jesse's remission.

    About six to eight weeks later, Jesse's cancer came back. The doctors were shocked because his type of cancer had such a high cure rate and he had passed the nine-month mark typically indicating a complete recovery. It boggled everyone's mind. Because there was no perfect match for a bone marrow transplant, he was put on a new two-year protocol for chemotherapy with new drugs.

    The doctors believed he had a 70% chance of remission. Jesse did well. When he came off the second protocol he was doing well. About six-to-eight months later she shampooed the kids' hair again for back-to-school. Six-to-seven weeks later, Jesse relapsed again. They took him to a prominent medical facility on the East Coast for a bone marrow transplant in 1991.

    It was mid-August 1992, and she again shampooed the kids' hair with NIX because it was once again back-to-school time. They went on vacation for a week and when they returned they took Jesse in for lab work to find that he had relapsed again and this time he was completely full of leukemia.

    It was at this time that she began to make the connection between Jesse's relapses and the head lice treatments. Every time she used head lice treatments, Jesse relapsed. After some research at the library, she found an EPA Pesticide fact sheet, which defined Lindane as an isomer of benzene hexachloride. She also found that there was sufficient evidence to support the dangers of exposure to benzene and that many reports associated leukemia with benzene exposure. That explained the Lindane she used but she also used so much NIX after which Jesse consistently went into relapse. So, she looked to find a correlation with NIX and Lindane and found an issue of Chemical Engineering News which had an article on the phasing out of chlorinated hydrocarbons. It included a specific chart, which included a listing of endocrine disrupters. Synthetic pyrethroids such as NlX were included in the chart with different herbicides, fungicides and pesticides. They were all in the same category in terms of their effects. And the negative effects were many.

    She was born in a time when you pulled out a can of RAID or OFF, spraying it freely to avoid bugs and mosquitoes. She never considered those chemicals as dangerous. They were just part of everyday life.

    Jesse died on September 11, 1993.

    Since May 1994, the NPA's National Reporting Registry has received hundreds of adverse reaction reports associated with all the commercially available lice and scabies pesticide treatment products.

    Each year hundreds of thousands of poorly informed parents apply potentially harmful pesticides to their children's scalp or skin to kill head lice or scabies. Education is vital. There are too many families yet to be reached and too many children unnecessarily put at risk.

    A natural cure for head lice is available from Planet Solutions. Use a dilution of Planet Solutions 1:1 applied to dry hair and allowed to stay 20 minutes and reapply and stay another 20 minutes, rinse thoroughly and use nit comb. It is so much safer than toxic over-the-counter treatments, such as NIX

    Friendship

    Today I heard from my best friend who I haven't heard from in close to 7 years~ It's really funny the way time passes by so quickly and you don't even realize that it's gone until one day you wake up and wonder where the years have gone. My best friend Jerri got married years ago and moved to Canada, and nothing has been the same since then. I remember all the good times, all the laughter, all the times we stayed up way later than we should have talking, singing, or just cutting up and being kids. For what ever reason I thought back then that we would always be that way, that we would always be teens, and that life would never catch us~not to mention that I would never have to grow up, drive a minivan, and get grey hair...I was wrong on all three counts!! Hearing from her though, and knowing she is doing well was the highlight of my day. When we were young she wrote a poem about friends, she was forever writing something and she was good, they were always so much better than the poetry I came up with. I wish she was closer, she was the sister I always wanted but never had, and always the voice of reason in my life, when I wanted to do something dumb she always gave me good advice. Friends like that only come once in a lifetime!

    HUGS TO MY BEST FRIEND, I REALLY MISS YOU

    This Week

    This week has been really hectic, but I'm very glad it's the weekend! Last weekend we bought a Kubota L175 Tractor with 3pt hitch, it takes a 4 ft implement. This is our first tractor so we are really excited about it, hopefully this means no more using hand tools to "till" my big garden :D The ground here is thick clay and is as hard as cement to turn by hand. We don't have any implements for it yet but soon we will be getting a disc and a box blade for it. We are also working on finding a little more land a bit farther north, it is just too hot for me down here lol. We are looking towards the Ozarks of Arkansas or Missouri, I have family in Arkansas and when Hubby was in his army training the folks near st. robert, missouri were extremely nice! It seemed like a real nice place to raise a family.

    More Garden News!

    We have close to 15 small squash developing on just one of our yellow crookneck squash plants, and we have 12 squash plants in all, 6 of which are the white acorn squash. Last year we had more squash than I knew what to do with and it looks like this year will be even better ! The tomatoes are doing decent, not nearly as big as they were this time last year but these were all planted from seed and I haven't spent as much time out there weeding and fertilizing as I should have. The kids are growing almost as fast as the weeds out here and my oldest son Christian has strepthroat :(, the cost of meds and Dr. visits is staggering when you have four kids! I found a website the other day that offers free ebooks(in addition to selling them) and they had a bunch of titles for mother's day, all of which were free!! The site is http://www.homeschoolestore.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=1016&affiliate_id=18592   , browse around and see what you think :) It's bedtime at our house and I have 4 very disgruntled children so I guess it means it's time to go for awhile.

    New Baby Goat!!!

    Hi all, it's taken me a few days but I finally got around to posting, my first time mama goat Chrysathemum (named after the book), just had her baby on the 17th! The new baby is a doeling and is just as cute as can be, she looks just like her mama!!!! All went very well and she is extremely playful, she tries to jump on mama's back! Besides that all the other girls are doing great, and talkative as ever :) The older goat kids are happy about the new addition to the barnyard as well. And of course as always Charlotte the obnoxious pig had to get her nose into the pen for a sniff, which got her a thorough head butting from mama lol! I never knew pigs could run so fast! As for the garden for some reason the squirrels are eating everything I have before it can ripen, it's getting really aggravating to say the least! I find at least a few cucumbers every day that they have munched half of and left the rest  Darned squirrels!!!! We are trying to figure out how to keep them out now, the garden is already double fence but of course they go through the top lol.

    Goats!

    Does anyone else out there keep goats? My goats get into everything, they are worse than the kids ;) They are the most curious little animals, they have to checkout everything and everyone who visits, and they simply must taste everything in the garden(cause you know most fences aren't goat proof lol). Mine really like eating my bean plants but luckily they won't touch my tomatoes,onions, or garlic :D The weather here is very nice, in the 70's during the day-50's at night.

    Springtime!

    Spring is definately in the air here! Not only is the garden really starting to take off but we are expecting 2 litters of bunnies, our Pygora doe is expecting,and our housecat got out and just gave us a litter of beautiful babies! We're hoping to add to our little homestead this year with some chickens,turkeys,several more muscovies and Guineas, and 3 or 4 additional does. We've also planted some blackberries,cherries,blueberries, and grapes, hopefully all will take to the soil well and not get too many parasites like our mustard greens did!

    Sleepy Day!

    Today was something else, I feel like falling out I'm so tired, I think I've done 10 loads of laundry lol. It's been raining off and on most of the day today, so working outside was definately out of the question. I want to sleep so bad right now but I have 4 kids still bright eyed and running around lol :P
