For His Glory...

Lookie what we have!

As I was taking my shower this morning, my oldest daughter rushes to the door and starts knocking. "Momma! Look what I found!" I say"Come on in"  and in she comes and thrusts her hand in between the shower curtain and the wall.(no...there is no persional space in my house. LOL!!!)  "We have eggs!" she excitedly proclaims. (as excited as a "cool" 13 yo will get)

It appears that our Ameracaunas have started laying. I took a pic with a store bought white egg just to show you how small they are. Aren't they just the most beautiful colour? The kids have requested breakfast for supper so that they can eat them. I think that they will be a little supprised when they taste how strong they probably are. Since the hens hadn't started laying, we have been giving them all of the garden scraps. This means onions too! That makes for a really smelly egg!

Have a blessed day!

OK....let me try this again!

I seem to be having a few problems with my page, so I will try this again! I had typed up an entry yesterday and when I tried to post it...POOF...it was gone.  AHHHHH!!!!!!

I cannot post any pictures at this time either because it says that I do not have enough space. Well pooh! LOL! I can't win for losing! I guess that I need to be content in whatever state I am in, right?

Well, the chicks are all growing well and seem to be quite content. I love to go out to the chicken yard and listen to all of the contented chirping that they do. It is almost like purring. I am still working on getting some milk goats though. I would just love to have fresh milk, butter and Mmmmm......cheese. Fresh milk would be the best as we have been drinking powdered milk for over a year now. We just cannot afford $4 and $5 a gallon. OUTRAGEOUS!

Our garden is doing well so far. Everything is up (well, we think that the carrots are....it is hard to tell!) We are worried though. The weather man said to expect a freeze tonight and tomorrow night with temps around 33-36 degrees. We have a plan though.  We have some plastic sheeting that we are going to tent over the rows and some buckets to put over the tomatoes. I have some old bed sheets that we are going to put over the peach trees to try to save them. Last year a late freeze killed them all. This year I hope to make some low-sugar (I am type 2 diabetic) preserves out of them, so I don't want anything to happen to them!

Just think of all the wonderful experiences that my kids are having. Those poor city kids never get to experience how great country life is! Thank you God for all of your blessings and for putting me right where you wanted me.

New chickie babies are here!

Just look at what we got yesterday!

Our Buff Orpingtons finally came in. See the one with the black marker streak on it's head? That's our rooster. We now have 5 Ameracaunas, 5 Barred Rocks, & 10 Buff Orpingtons (9 female-1 male)

Aren't they just the cutest? Right now we have them in a box with a light in a back room until we can make other arrangements for them. Of course they are way too young to be with the others right now. I am not sure of thier exact age, but I know that they are still pretty young because they all still have an egg tooth.

Well, that is all for now. I just wanted to post some pictures real quick. See you all next week!

God Bless!

Broken ground.

{ 01:36 PM, Monday 24 March 2008 } { Posted in Country Girl! } { 1 comments } { Link }

Here is Hubby on a borrowed tractor, breaking ground for our garden. He tilled about 35' x 70'. That gives us room for 8 rows about 65' long. We almost forgot to add in for a weed free perimeter! LOL! I am not sure exactly how we plan to section it off yet, but I know that we want atleast 2 half rows of corn, possibly 3. We must not forget about the corn needing to pollinate. Very, Very important! It has been SO long since we have had a garden, that I hope we do ok this year.

Oh, look.......sand. Welcome to the sandhills region of South Carolina. Home of the Loblolly Pine and sand.    Wikipedia / Sandhills Region Here is another link if you are further interested in my state. South Carolina

Wow! Who knew that a simple post about gardening would turn into a geography lesson. Can you tell that we are a Homeschooling Family? LOL!!! Boy do the kids hate it when I do that and they figure it out.They say "Mom! We don't need to learn something new every time we do something!" LOL!!!

Anyways.... I hope that you have enjoyed my pictures.

God Bless!

Chickie Babies!

{ 03:47 PM, Thursday 20 March 2008 } { Posted in Country Girl! } { 4 comments } { Link }

I finally got around to taking some pictures of the new chicks and I figured that I needed to post them on here without any more delay! So, lets start with the coop and the yard. Now, remember ladies, most of this was built out of recycled materials. Good for the environment you know.  Ok, it's really because it was free!!! LOL!!

We chose the location because it would blend in and provide some shade in the heat of the day. You know how those SC dog days are!

Here is the view directly in the door. The next pic is the view to the right. We figured that we would start out with a small coop, and add on  to the left if we need to in the future. We have plastic over the wire in the back right now because the temps in the night are still pretty cool. This will come off during the late spring and through the summer and the fall to keep the coop cool. We plan to tack up a piece of OSB next winter that we can take back down in the late spring of the following year.

Sorry that the pics aren't too great. Now for the featured attractions!

The larger brown looking ones are Ameracaunas and the smaller black and white ones are Barred Rocks.

Sorry that I don't have any more at this time. When I tried to take thier picture, they all wanted to hide! At least this will give you an idea of what we have. The Buff Orpingtons are due to arrive within a week or so after Easter. The only rooster that we will have will be an Orpington and we will possibly pick another one up when we pick up the other chicks.

So to date at home we have 5 Barred Rocks & 5 Ameracaunas. We have ordered 10 Orpingtons (1 rooster).  Pray for us as we continue on our journey in walking the old paths!

God bless you all!
