A woman I know online will give birth this week. Within hours of giving birth, her baby will die. It's a condition called Potters Syndrome, and it is her second baby with this syndrome. I can't even imagine what she is going through this week. There is a prayer blog organized for her here - http://www.homeschoolblogger.com/DandelionSeeds/
Crystal, from Biblical Womanhood, is putting together an encouragment box. If you'd like to take part in this, you can find out how here - http://www.biblicalwomanhood.com/2006/09/opportunity-to-help-family-in-need.html

I'm seriously thinking about building an ark. It's been one of those weird years - no rain, then nonstop rain. Back to no rain to the point of drought, and now we are back to worrying about flood stages again.
One of the calves is really not liking the weather. I've never read about this happening with anyone else, so maybe we just pick the weird depressed cows - but it's common here. we bring these babies home, too young to be away from their mom's, but the dairy farmers are selling them off the day they are born. :-( We bottle feed them and most do very well.. but we have one out there, again, that gets depressed. I don't know how else to explain it, but if I don't go check on him he'll sprawl out like he's dying, and he actually gets cold and has trouble getting up, he gets weak. I've seen this with others, and if I don't go roust them up and get them moving, they die. Well this calf was doing very well, he's several months old, but since this weather started, he's been doing this. I had to roust him twice today. Both times I thought he was already dead when I got to him, but once I got him up and around he did well.
We have two new goats. Goofy things - they escaped from 3 different pens, ending up at the gate of the lower goat pen, crying for in. I don't like to put new goats in with my herd for at least two weeks, I typically keep them in quarantine pens, but they were determined! I hope they really are disease free, they are in with my best mom's!
We have two new bunnies too - I picked them up at the Amish sale on Saturday. A new angora (French? she is different from my other French angora though!) and a lion head. That brings us to 6 - two English angoras, one French angora, the new angora, a full sized calico rex and the lionhead. That's enough for the winter!
Weird video link - I feel the need to pass this along so you can be as puzzled/amused as I am. :-)
I'm working on a denim chenille quilt for Matt, made out of his old jeans and an old t-shirt. Instructions here. It's coming together fast now, I should have all the sewing done tomorrow, hopefully!
The kids and I did another geocache on Monday. It was a gorgeous hike over in the gamelands, and we picked up another coin - a new icon in our geocaching profile. We're so addicted! :-)

4.2 miles, or 5 miles?

According to the GPS, I walked 4.2 miles today. According to the maps at the lake, those two trails combined equal 5 miles. Last time I walked it, the gps said 4.8 miles. Go figure! I'm hoping their maps are right! I've been walking this path a couple of times a week for the last few weeks. My time has been steadily improving, although it's still taking me an hour and 25 minutes to walk and another 20-30 minutes driving time.. that's a huge chunk of my day! But I NEED to get in shape, I don't like being the one lagging behind when we are out geocaching with the kids. You'd think all this farm work would have me in better shape, but it's just not enough.

We did the hike to get the mountain cacheoid coin I wanted to find for our geocaching log. Ooooooohhhh my! My legs hurt! That was HIKE! We did it though! And one other cache, putting us at 50. :-) The kids all have eye dr appointments on Friday, in a new area with a couple of other caches I'm hoping to squeeze in.. we are so addicted!
It's been raining nonstop here. Feast or famine - draught or drown this year! :-)

![]() The kids took part in corn shelling, bale tossing, and bale stacking competitions. Nate and Dan were in first place in their age groups, when we left last night. There will be a lot more people there tonight I would imagine, so they aren't getting their hopes up. :-)
Nate came in 3rd in the pedal tractor pull, out of 9 boys in his age division.
It was a fun night! Meg rode a pony, her and matt both rode in the barrels and we did 4 geocaches while we were in the area. :-)
We found an evil micro coin, so there's one more on our list. We sure love those new little icons in our geocaching profile!
Today the boys are floating down the river with the boy scouts, and I am seriously considering planning two more caches for this afternoon. There's another coin nearby that I'd love to discover, and we'd really like to find two more caches so we reach the 50 mark before school starts. Can someone tell me...

Is there a way to respond to a comment directly to the person who left it? The only way I have found is to go to their blog and post it as a new comment in some area of their blog.. which seems so disjointed, when trying to answer a question they have left as a comment. Is there a better way?
TIA!
850 ears of corn

We picked 850 ears of corn this morning. 250 ears as a thank you to a neighbor who allows us to farm 5 acres of his land. 100 ears in trade for a tube for the tire of my Super H. And 500 ears were sold, at $14 a 100.
We still have a few hundred to pick, we have a couple more customers and I plan to do more for my freezer yet too, but that can wait until tomorrow!
We had a good system. Dan and I picked, Nate held he feed bags for us to pick into. Matt drove the lawnmower with wagon back and forth, picking up the corn we picked and taking it to the front yard, where Meg and Luke counted it into piles of 50. Then they all bagged it for the individual customers while I made breakfast. A pretty productive morning, if I do say so myself!

My boys are 13! How did that happen? I can't be that old!
We started their birthday with a nearby geocache (goose pond) , to pick up a specific travel bug. It was a gorgeous hike and a nice way to start the day! The TB is Dillbug, and his goal is to visit baseball fields. We picked him up to take to the Little League World Series. :-)
Dan took all three of the boys to the LLWS, Meg and I opted to stay home and get some things done here. The boys had a great time! They slid down the hill on cardboard before coming home - a tradition there. :-)
In the evening Eric stopped in and helped Luke put together a rocket. We launched that a couple of times! It's stuck in the tree beside the house right now, I need to add that little problem to my to do list today. :-)
at 8:00, when all the sports practices were finally over, Dan's family came up for cake and ice cream. We hid the boys cards using the GPS unit, so they had to geocache them. They loved it.
They had a birthday party at my mom's house on saturday night, birthday cake at the geocaching event on Sunday, cake and ice cream on Monday (for their actual birthday) and I am taking birthday cake to the Scouts picnic/court of honor tonight. We're stretching this birthday out pretty good! :-) They get to go to a Crosscutters baseball game tomorrow night too!

Luke had the opportunity to apprentice with our friend who is both a wheelwright and blacksmith at Rural Heritage Days in Lewisburg. He LOVED it! We're getting the paperwork started for him to be enrolled in the apprentice program at Warrior Run, so he can continue to apprentice with Bradd at the Warrior Run Heritage Days in October. geocaching event

Sunday we attended our first geocaching event. It was a large picnic with other geocachers, where we learned a lot! We ended up doing 13 caches in that area as well - 13 caches for the twins 13th birthday. How cool!
Dan and I are thinking about planning a local event for this fall. With people there to demonstrate the dfferent GPS units, differnt software, a travel bug swap, etc. I think it sounds like fun. :-)
August!

August is flying by! I keep hoping things will slow down soon, but with football season upon us.. most likely not. :-) Nate is playing 8th grade football this year, Matt is playing midget league and Meg is cheering for Matt's team.
We spent the first week of August out at Steelers Training camp, as we do every year. It was SO crowded, it makes us almost hope they don't win again this year.
The second week of the month Luke and Nate attended Boy Scouts National Youth Leadership Training Camp. We're so proud of them! Both have their 1st class rank, and have almost all their requirements met for star.
This week we attended Ag Progress Days at Penn State. That's such a great event! Dan actually went twice, once with our neighboring farmer (and cousin) and once with us. While there we stopped in Boalsburg for some geocaching - we are so addicted!
Today we are baling hay, we want to get it all in before it rains this week-end. Seems like we are always baling hay here, but we sell it almsot as fast as we bale it.. it's a rough year for a lot of people.
Tom - the caped goat - was loose, as he often is, when a corn customer stopped in and accidentally ran over him. We are all devestated. :-(
Luke bought his first goat this week. He's pretty excited! She's just a baby, but he hopes to breed her with our Billy goat next year.
The twins will be 13 on Monday - I can't believe I am old enough to have teen agers! :-)
