My beautiful day
Today was a beautiful day. It got close to 60 degrees F again,
and it was sunny with little wind. I took some pictures (see
previous post.) I also played with Polly and the chickens, took a
long walk, cleaned, did some dishes, mostly spent my day outside,
enjoying the good life.
I talked to my sister, Beth, a bit. We are getting together
tomorrow to make some salsa and to can it. I can hardly
wait! Can you tell I'm excited? I'm excited. My
sister is wonderful. She's a nature photographer. If you
wan't to see some beautiful pictures, check out her website:
www.ejoylife.com
There is a link to her online portfolio there. She's a really
creative person, and alot of fun to hang out with. She would be a
natural homesteader, and really does alot of things homesteaders do
(cans, makes her own bread and jam, gardens...) Maybe she can
give me some pointers on how to use the camera my mom lent me.
I'm going to bring her some eggs, for which she is pretty thrilled
about. She already let me know I can talk her out of some
blackberry jam. Maybe she has some pears off her tree left
too... almost too much to hope for.
I'm cooking the chicken I roasted on (what was it??? Monday,
Tuesday?) Making stock out of it. Once again, it was
wonderful. Oh, that reminds me, I have to throw in a couple bay
leaves. Be right back...
Miss me? Anyways, it won't be done for a couple days, so I made
enchiladas tonight. Next time I make them I will use the recipe I
found here (on deedee06's blog) for the sauce. I'm looking forward to that.
Some of my recipes sound kind of strange to people. There's a
reason. When I was young, I got a whiff of sulfur dioxide in my
nose and lost my sense of smell for about ten years. It's still
not completely right, for example, I'm pretty sure they didn't intend
to make Noxema cold cream smell like burning fiberglass, but that's how
it smells to me. Without a sense of smell, food can be really
boring, as smell is important in relation to taste. So you make
up for it. Everything I learned how to do then, I still do.
I have come to make food visually beautiful, and texturally
interesting. The little taste you do have when you can't smell is
limited to salty, sweet, sour, and bitter. So I play with those
elements. Tonights enchiladas have raisins and nuts and olives in
them, among other things. The raisins are chewy (texture,) and
sweet (taste.) The nuts, crunchy. The olives, salty. I also
developed a love of really spicy food when I had no sense of
smell. The heat sensation of peppers, garlic, horseradish,
mustard, and the like keeps food interesting. Tonights dinner has
alot of peppers and garlic.
Hmmm. I'm getting hungry, and dinner is done. I'll talk to you all later.
Peace,
Raymond

of my sister. She has an amazing eye. She takes pictures with a digital camera, and then sometimes she will play with them on the computer. Her works can look like paintings, or line drawings, or abstractions, or even kaliedoscopic. The one I have on my wall here is an echanacia done as a kaliedoscope. It's beautiful. My parents have alot of her work on their walls. Some of the stuff that looks like watercolors is just amazing. Some things she doesn't touch up at all. She's got a great eye.
Thanks,
Raymond
