How does your garden grow, from the front porch

I got this from the front porch, thought it sounded like fun!

How Does Your Garden Grow???

What is your gardening style?  Organic or "chemical" fertilzers and pest control?  Organic and permiculture, also looking into biodynamic farming techniques.

What planting method do you use?  Square foot, raised beds, traditional single rows, wide rows, intensive plantings, containers, a little of all these???
My garden would be best described as "chaos theory gardening."  A little of everything, from rows and raised beds, to containers, fill in the gap, and thickets.  I would like to design a "Mandelbrot set" herb garden, but probably not this year.

Do you plan out your garden in detail, or just get out there and plant?
Well planned chaos.  Haven't been doing it long enough to learn any better.

What do you grow?  Veggies, Fruits, Herbs, Flowers....EVERYTHING!?
Everything.  And then some.

What do you do with your harvests?  Eat it all right away, share with friends and family, preserve for the coming months, sell it at the farmers market?
I want to market garden, but I haven't done it before.  I also want to preserve, and have done little in the past.  I normally have eaten it as it comes, and shared when there was too much.  This rarely happens.

What is one thing that you definitely will not grow this year?
Watermelon.  I don't like it that much, although I will try other melons.

What is one "must have" for your garden this year?
One?  If I have to chose just one, I would say basil.  I never grow enough.  Plan on having a 100' x 4' bed with just basil this year, and plant it in among tomatoes and onions in another bed.  Is 400 square feet of basil enough?  I'll let you know.

Thanks!  Can't wait to see others,

Raymond

Well planned chaos - exactly what I do! :-)

Sounds like a good "unplan" !

Don't you just love basil? I can't believe how many varieties there are. I always try to plant some along a walkway and when I walk by, I just give it a stroke....the aroma just permeates the air. Hmmm. Do you dry your herbs?....we do. The little garden survey sounds like fun, I think I'll post it tomorrow :)
Good evenin'

Yes.

Some herbs I do dry. But not basil.

Any left over basil (who ever heard of such a thing) I make into pesto and freeze.

I don't dry cilantro or mint (except for tea) either. You can make pesto with those too, and most of my leftover cilantro goes into salsa. Just about every thing else I dry though, especially oregano and sage. With the perenneal evergreens (like rosemary,) I just cut them as I use them.

Thanks!

Raymond

Hmmmm.....

Well, this year was a little more planned out. This is fun. I may have to blog it on mine. I must say I am getting the garden edge. We went from 60's to now freezing. Yuck! We are in the 20's now and single digits at night.

Thanks for sharing your answers with us :) . I love your description- Chaos Theory Gardening! Sounds very much like what I do. I start out with a plan of sorts, and then just go for it. If it turns into a jungle, the kids will love it, and usually even find a harvest or two in there for you! That's a lot of Basil, but with all the varieties out there it would be easy to plant that much. My dh planted almost that much zuchinni once...the neighbors wouldn't even open their doors when they saw him coming!
Can't wait to read about your gardens!
Blessings,
Catherine
