My day
Really, I slept too much today. I was up well past my bedtime, and took a nap from about 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.
The chickens were a joy. I think I know which one is Robin.
She's my smaller red hen (quite appropriate,) that apparently lays the
light blue eggs. I'm hoping she will end up broody, as when I
showed up first thing this morning she was sitting on the nest with her
egg and Olives egg that I left out there so they wouldn't move the nest
again. This afternoon she was busy with the feed when I took
Olives egg and left hers.
While I was in Portland, I picked up a disposable camera, so I hope to
have pictures of Polly, the farm, the house, and the adult chickens
soon. Alot of my personal friends and family have been asking for
pictures. I'm not too good at taking them (that's my sisters
talent,) but I'm going to give it a try.
The snow is almost gone, but what is left is now a thick layer of
ice. Thaw, freeze, thaw, freeze. At least it's warm
inside. The woodstove is kicking out the heat today. It's
pretty cozy.
I saw a good recipe for biscuits on KSC's blog, and I think I'm going
to give it a try. I think I know why mine never turn out
now. I've been melting my butter to mix it in easier, and
apparently that's not a good idea. I have no idea why, but I'm
going to try doing it with cold butter and see if it works better.
I'm looking into getting a grain mill. I know pretty much nothing
about them. I was going to get a grainmill attatchment for my
Kitchenaide mixer, but after reading the reviews I think that I should
get a standalone mill. Does anyone use these? Which ones,
and how do you like them? What should I look for in a grain
mill? I like my flour a bit coarse, and I would like to be able
to grind beans and nuts as well as grains. I don't mind hand
cranks, but the option to power it would be nice. Stone burrs vs.
steel? I'm really don't know...
Tried to leash train Polly some today. She HATES it. She
would run, get knocked down when she reached the end of the leash,
yelp, and look at me with the saddest eyes. If I want to take her
into town though, I really need to get her used to a leash. And
when I do leave her home, I want to leave her tied outside so she
doesn't trash the house.
Other than that, my day was pretty slow. Thinking about dinner
now, maybe a tuna casserole. I have a lot of tuna, and I don't
use it for much else. Yeah, Tuna casserole sounds good.
Talk to you soon,
Blessings,
Raymond

I love our Country Living Grain Mill - http://www.countrylivinggrainmills.com/
I ground soy beans and it worked very well. To me it's very much worth the money to buy it. When you grind flour you get more than you started with (like 1 cup grains or beans = 1 1/3 cup flour approx.) I've ground rice also. It is not electric but it is not hard to use - I use it all the time, more and more as I'm getting used to it.
