Project for Homeschool
I'll preface by saying that I don't really know much about teaching, much less homeschooling. And I have to say that I don't know if this sort of project will work for all people. However, we did this in one of my college Art History classes recently, and I learned a lot from it, having to apply the research I had previously done.
Our project was to research a time period of history, make a report on it, and then do an artwork reflecting the culture from whatever medium (the medium is from what you actually make the artwork). This last week we decided that the only stipulation was that it had to be edible! It was so much fun! :o) We researched pottery, paintings, drawings, sculpture, and architecture (thought many many cultures have many more types of artwork), and talked about the characteristics of the style of art reflected from the period.
Anyway, I chose to do a Hellenistic face, for example, on a pizza. It was a low-relief sculpture on a cheese pizza with a very expressive face using jalapeno eyes, mushroom eyebrows, mushroom nose, carrot hair, and bellpepper lips. Another lady did the Gothic period, which is known for their stained-glass windows, and did a colorful jello stained-glass window.
This project can be incorporated into many areas of study as a fun application. In high school biology, we made "cell" pizzas and "cell" cakes. We just had to be able to present the food infront of the class, labeling each cellular body before we all ate it.
These are the types of projects that help me learn b/c I am able to think about the information in a new and creative way. It helps me understand the subject matter by incorporating it into a new and fun creation. I will post the pictures as soon as my classmate emails them to me.
