Household Binders

Posted on Wednesday 20 June 2007 at 1:12 PM in Keeping The Home - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Candi over at Keeping The Home posted a nice blog about creating a Home Management Binder.  I'll tell ya...I'm organizationally challenged. My grandmother used to tell me all the time I'd lose my head if it wasn't attached. lol It really helps me to keep all my important stuff in one place...bills, receipts, menus, coupons, appointments, contacts etc. It really helps to keep me more organized than I really am. I posted last year about mine...I call it my Household Binder...you can find that post here. I have actually updated mine since that post, so one of these days when the software for our camera is working again I'll post some new pictures. I also created my own planner pages...you can find the post and the pages here.

Getting Up Early...Before Hubby??

Posted on Wednesday 13 June 2007 at 2:37 PM in Keeping The Home - 1 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Morning Fresh from AllPosters.com

No.  I'm not a morning person.  Neither is Hubby.  Getting up early has always been a hard thing for me to accomplish.  I'm lucky I get up when I do.  I'm almost embarrased to say that Hubby is the one who wakes me up in the morning.  He gets up and once he gets out from his shower, he wakes me up.  It's usually somewhere between 6:30 and 7:00 am.  From there I begin my day by making coffee, getting his lunch together.  If Boo isn't up by the time Hubby leaves for work, I wake Boo up.  Now, Boo is an interesting child to me.  He wakes instantly and begins to chatter as soon as his eyes open.  It seriously boggles my mind.  I don't even have both eyes open and can't put a full sentence together until I've finished a couple cups of coffee (which I'm TRYING to decrease my consumption of).  I hear all the time on different homemaking blogs and websites about how good it is for me to get up early...even before everyone else.  Get yourself ready for the day, get in your quiet time with the Lord etc.  I hear that in the summer the Amish get all their baking done early in the morning so they themselves don't bake in their homes.  But no matter how early I get to bed...waking early and getting out of bed before everyone else hardly ever happens.  So for me...it works to have hubby wake me up.  I'd sure love to hear how others do it.

I'm Ann, and I wear aprons.

Imagine this scenerio...a mom standing over a pile of clothes (mostly shirts) shaking her head as she goes through and pre-treats the stains for the wash...hoping the clothes aren't ruined.  This is me. And it's not my husbands clothes or my 7 year old sons clothes...they are mine. I'm a slob in the kitchen you see. I have ruined more clothes by cooking and cleaning than I care to count. My solution is aprons. Not those silly half things, they don't serve any purpose for me except a place to dry my hands. I need those full aprons that cover my shirts too. I had some family members that snickered at me when I registered for aprons as I was putting together my bridal registry 12 years ago. I could only find the butcher types then, but they worked...when I would wear them. Family and friends also snickered at me when I would wear my aprons so for a long time I avoided them. Today, they can snicker all they want, I wear them all the time. I personally like the frilly, pretty old fashioned ones like my great-grandmother would wear. I'm even making some aprons to give out as gifts to those very same family members who snickered at me. And you know what? I think they might even wear them! I find that I feel more feminine and productive when I'm wearing an apron (whether or not I'm actually am). And I'm not ruining as many shirts.

Laundry Laundry Laundry

Posted on Tuesday 17 April 2007 at 2:09 PM in Keeping The Home - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Yesterday was a sunny, windy day...perfect for hanging laundry out to dry.  I was able to get almost completely caught up on laundry rather quickly...and cheaply!   I did about 7  loads of laundry yesterday including sheets and I did another three loads today that included winter coats, rugs and a couple pillows.  Yesterday I had to really make sure things were secure on the line so they didn't blow off and collect down the street...today there is hardly any wind at all so things are taking longer to dry.  Usually I try to get a load of laundry done a day...skipping Saturdays and Sundays.  Sinus headaches, Aunty Flo and procrastination have gotten me behind.  It's nice to be caught up.

I actually like doing laundry, especially when I'm able to hang it up outside.  What I don't like is folding it all up and putting it away...but I'm working through it.

Cleaning Focus Today - Living Room/Dining Room

Posted on Tuesday 10 April 2007 at 8:16 AM in Keeping The Home - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I was feeling quite misserable yesterday, so I didn't get half of the things done in the kitchen that I wanted to.   I'm not going to freak about it, but I'll revisit it all next Monday.

Today my deep cleaning focus is my living room and dining room.  Really isn't too much in either of these rooms so I can combine the tasks in one day.  On the to do list for both rooms today:

Wiping walls/baseboards/doors and cleaning cobwebs; dusting tables, nic-nacs, pictures, light fixtures, TV/electronics; clean and vacuum under cusions;  straighten drawers/tapes/DVD's/books; move furniture and vacuum.

I'm sure there is more...that's all I can think of right now.  I'm off to get Boo started on his school work for today and I'll be getting started on my cleaning.

Cleaning Focus Today - Kitchen

In addition to my daily tasks, my deep cleaning focus today is my kitchen.  It really needs help after this weekend!  Tomorrow is garbage day, so I like to clean the fridge out the day before.  Here are some of the things I'll be trying to accomplish today:

Clean the outside of all appliances, clean inside and top of fridge, clean inside of microwave, run vinegar through coffee maker, pull of stove knobs and soak/wash; dust/clean fan/light fixtures, window sill and window, jar/canisters, fan/vent/light/filter/hood; spot clean walls and clean cobwebs; wipe down cabinet fronts, clean under sink and toss old rags; clean rugs, sweep/mop floor; wash dog bowls; trash can out to the curb.

Not sure how far I'll get especially since I'm crampy today and we are back to schooling after our spring break.  Maybe after a nice cuppa tea I'll be energized!

Kitchen Day

Today my cleaning focus is my kitchen.  Some of the things I'll be doing today include cleaning the fridge...inside and outside (tomorrow is garbage day so it's a good time to do it); wipe down all the appliances; clean/dust light fixtures, fan fixtures, window sills, base boards etc.; clean rugs; sweep/mop the floor; clean pet dishes; clean trash can; clean the top of fridge....I'm sure there is more but that is all I can think of right now.  I'm sure that is enough to keep me very busy.

No Daily Schedule

Posted on Friday 2 March 2007 at 10:15 AM in Keeping The Home - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

I don't have one! I'm not sure if that is good or bad. I have a routine...but it's not a written out schedule like I see a lot of ladies have posted on their blogs. I keep trying to put together a schedule...but I spend all my time putting it together and very little time on actually using it. Anyone else have that problem?

So instead I have a list of chores for each day, a list of things to do for homeschool and I go from there.

I usually start the day by pulling the covers back on the bed to let it air out. A lot of mornings I'll be making coffee and lunch for hubby as he's getting ready for work. Once he's gone then I bring a load of laundry to the washer and get that started. By then Boo is up. We have breakfast, get dressed and get the beds made. Boo has a bit of free time while I check email then we get him started on school work. Here I'll tidy the kitchen/living room, load the dishwasher, swish toilets and tidy the bathrooms. That stuff really doesn't take too long.

Then I go to my list and see what tasks I have for the day and I knock those off one by one. During this will be lunch and cleaning up after lunch, drying and folding the laundry and getting it put away and homeschooling. Then there is dinner and spending time together as a family. Once Boo is in bed (usually about 8:30) I'll tidy the house up one last time and spend time with hubby before bed.

That is the basic routine. Today is Friday and is my day to clean the laundry room up. I'll be gathering up unused hangers, wiping walls and cleaning the washer/dryer, organizing cleaning supplies, going through the unmatched sock basket, mending clothes, vacumming. Friday is also the day I clean out my purse. My list is broken down so that each room(s) is cleaned on a different day:

Monday: Kitchen
Tuesday: Living Room/Dining Room
Wednesday: Bedrooms/Office
Thursday: Bathrooms
Friday: Laundry Room/Patio

Saturdays I'll do the daily basics but pretty much leave the day open to spend the day doing things with Hubby. Sundays we use for the Lord as a day for church, family and rest.

Homemaking ABC meme

Posted on Thursday 25 January 2007 at 3:29 PM in Keeping The Home - 0 Comments - Post Comment - Link

This was posted on Abundant Blessings blog (http://www.homesteadblogger.com/HandsNHearts/42582/ABC%26%2339%3Bs+meme+for+fun.html) who got it from Sallie at A Gracious Home (http://agracioushome.com/?p=890) who started it.  She is also keeping track of who is participating so be sure to stop by her website and add your name.  Here are my answers:

Aprons - Y/N? If Y, what does your favorite look like?
I have three, one is a multi-colored BBQ apron and the other two are terry cloth half aprons.

Baking - Favorite thing to bake?
Breads

Clothesline - Y/N?
Yes, but the posts are old and it dearly needs help.

Donuts - Have you ever made them?
Yes, especially paczki's.

Every day - One homemaking thing you do every day?
Hmmmm...fixing meals.

Freezer - Do you have a separate deep freeze?
Not yet, but hopefully we will have one by summer.

Garbage Disposal - Y/N?
Yes, we have a great garbage disposal...we've had it for two years now. Unfortunately it's still sitting in its box waiting to be installed.

Handbook - What is your favorite homemaking resource?
The internet.

Ironing - Love it or hate it? Or hate it but love the results?
I actually love ironing.

Junk drawer - Y/N? Where is it?
I don't think I would classify it as a junk drawer, but I have an old nightstand in our diningroom that I use for homeschooling items such as pens, pencils, markers, rubber bands, post-it notes etc. and it's interesting to see the things that find there way in there.

Kitchen - Color and decorating scheme?
RED with white trim. It's kind of a country look.

Love - What is your favorite part of homemaking?
Knowing this is where the Lord wants me.

Mop - Y/N?
*sigh* More like scrub. I don't have a mop right now so I scrub it with a big ol' scrub brush. Needless to say it doesn't get done a lot.

Nylons - Wash by hand or in the washing machine?
Washing machine. I never have time to wash anything by hand.

Oven - Do you use the window or open the oven to check?
I don't have a window on my oven so I have to peek!

Pizza - What do you put on yours?
What ever is in the fridge at the time. If we end up going out for pizza its usually a veggie pizza.

Quiet - What do you do during the day when you get a quiet moment?
With Boo there really isn't any quiet moments...but if I do get one it I suppose I'll be found reading something.

Recipe card box - Y/N? What does it look like?
No, I have a three ring photo album that I use to put recipe cards into.

Style of house - What style is your house?
3 bedroom ranch

Tablecloths and napkins - Y/N?

Yes, I love tablecloths and use them all the time but I don't have many napkins right now...one of the many projects I will get to one day.

Under the kitchen sink - Organized or toxic wasteland?
Actually it's pretty organized.

Vacuum - How many times per week?
I'll admit that I only vacuum twice a week.

Wash - How many loads of laundry do you do per week?
It varies. I usually do one or two loads a day except Sundays...sometimes more if I'm hanging things outside...which I'm not now because it's snowing and way too cold.

X's - Do you keep a daily list of things to do that you cross off?
Yes I have lists...no I don't cross them off because I usually can't find them.

Yard - Y/N? Who does what?
Hubby and Boo take care of the lawn...I take care of the most of the gardening with Hubby and Boo's help.

Zzz's - What is your last homemaking task for the day before going to bed?
Ummmm...probably getting the coffee maker ready for the morning.

So Ya Had A Bad Day....Ink In The Dryer

Posted on Tuesday 23 January 2007 at 9:52 AM in Keeping The Home - 3 Comments - Post Comment - Link

Yes, I had a bad day yesterday.  So  far, today is much better.  But yesterday...*sigh*

Just a few things...the two loaves of bread I made never did rise, I broke ANOTHER glass (I think I only have a couple of them left), Boo decided yesterday would be a good day to be whiney and cranky, an ink pen mysteriously made its way into my dryer...actually all over the inside of the dryer and all over the clothes that were in there and I spent a couple hours with the bottle of alcohol and a rag trying to clean the inside of the dryer so that I could dry Hubbys uniforms for work.  That's just a few things that happened yesterday.

Anyway...today I have to finish cleaning the ink from the inside of the dryer.  Rubbing alcohol and elbow grease are doing a good job so far.  There will be some blue stains, but hopefully it won't get on any clothing.  As for the clothing...hairspray/rubbing alcohol should do the trick with a little more elbow grease for those that only have a couple ink marks...but several are covered with ink and I don't think I have the patience to try all get the ink out.

Well...the lesson is to do a better job checking ALL Hubbys clothes for things hiding in pockets.

Now...I have a dryer to finish cleaning.
