Discussion on Assignment #10

I'm sorry I haven't been around to visit and make comments.  We have not gotten internet at our home as of yet.  So being able to get online is a little more challenging right now.  We will hopefully have our internet set up at home this week.  Yay!   There are several of you that haven't been a part of our discussions the last couple of weeks.  I hope all is okay.  I hope you will be back with us in our discussions soon.

This has been an excellent chapter, yet one that is filled with debated issues.  The first issue tackled in our reading this week was that of influences on our children.  Oh how timely this is.  This is such a widely debated issue.  I look forward to hearing your thoughts on it.  I have always been pretty particular about the kinds of influences our children are exposed to - from TV, to music, to friends and more.  And I feel this is such an important issue.  I want to highlight a few portions from our text that I think are so important.  The author points out:

"The Truth is, our task is not to rear children who can 'fit in' or merely 'survive' in this world.  The challenge of every Christian parent is to bring up children who love God with all their hearts, souls, minds, and strength; who have a vibrant, personal relationship with the Lord Jesus; and whose lives will be bright and shining lights, penetrating the darkness around them.  Christian parents ought to be seeking to raise up not just 'good' children, but children who enthusiastically embrace the Truth, children who love righteousness and hate evil, children who will be used by God to change the world." (pg. 173)

"If we allow our children to listen to music, attend movies, read books and magazines, and hang out with friends that promote profanity, negative attitudes, illicit sex, rebellion, and violence, we should not be surprised when they adopt the world's philosophies."  (pg. 175)

"We are not to be molded by the culture, as so many believers are today but, rather, are to be so filled with the Spirit and the Word of God that our lives will penetrate and convict the culture around us.  That is the challenge facing Christian parents - to raise up a generation of young people who are not conformers but transformers."  (pg. 176)

Transformers - NOT conformers.  Powerful!  Will we, as parents, rise to the challenge of raising our children to be transformers?

Our Memory Work

Assignment

Reading
Read chapter eight - pages 193-213.

Questions
This week's questions are taken from The Companion Guide for Lies Women Believe on pages 89-99.

1.  "Read Deuteronomy 4:24; Psalm 30:5; 36:5; and Matthew 26:38.  What are some of the emotions God experiences?  Why is it important to understand that God expresses emotions?" (pg. 90)

2.  "Because we are made in God's image (Genesis 1:27), what does that mean about our emotions?"  (pg. 90)

3.  "Why is it dangerous for us to live and act completely on the basis of our feelings?" (pg. 91)

4.  "Read Isaiah 26:3; Philippians 4:8-9; and Colossians 3:1-2.  How can we be free from the control of feelings that are not based on Truth?  Why is it so important to control what we think about?" (pg. 92)

5.  "What positive steps does the Scripture exhort us to take in dealing with runaway emotions?" (pg. 92)

6.  "Read 2 Peter 1:4.  How can God's promises protect us from expressing our natural emotions in sinful ways?" (pg. 93)

7.  "Many Christians have experienced a 'dark night of the soul,' even while they are walking with God.  Read Isaiah 50:10; Hebrews 4:14-16; and 12:3.  According to God's Word, what should a believer do at such times?" (pg. 96)

8.  "Hormonal changes are very real - no woman will contest that.  What provision(s) has God made to help us deal with those changes in a way that glorifies Him?" (pg. 98)

All the above questions have been taken from The Companion Guide for Lies Women Believe by Nancy Leigh DeMoss published by Moody Publishers, Chicago, IL  ©2002.

~ All About Me ~

I grew up in a ministry family. The daughter of a preacher, I definitely fit the typical mold of a preacher’s kid. I have had many life experiences including being a pregnant teen and single mom, experiencing divorce, and more. All of my life experiences, good and bad, have molded me into the person I am today. I have an intense desire to see women live in the freedom Christ came to give them. I myself know the prison of bondage and the liberation of Christ.
