On the farm

I am so excited to start this new blog! I have learned so much already, just reading some of yours, and I am inspired. For those of you who haven't seen me on homeschool blogger, I am Michelle, and I live on a little peice of land in an old farmhouse we have been updating for the past 10 years. We are partially surrounded by a luscious pear orchard. A year ago we began homeschooling my son, who is now 16. He was adopted from Russia almost 5 years ago. My daughter, 4, is also enjoying being taught at home, and she wouldn't have it any other way. My husband is a part time primary level PE teacher, and he enjoys his job, and works very close to home. I also work part time in the field of Occupational therapy at facility for Children with special health care needs. We share in the task of homeschooling, and feel very thankful to have found this option for our family!

I just wish there were more hours in the day to do all the things I want to do. Simplicity is key, and I strive for slower pace of life. This past year, I have come up against some health challenges which have caused me to drastically change the way I cook and eat. I will share more along the way, as I believe God for a complete healing.

This week has been good. Here are some of the things we've been up to:

Work: I have infants through 10 yr olds on my caseload at the moment. I work very closely with families, and provide training to parents. I am seeing some wonderful progress with so many of them! One passion of mine is to offer information to parents about the harmful effects of excessive t.v. viewing in young children, how this negatively impacts healthy brain development. This includes all screen time, video games, and computers. I had the opportunity to do a presentation on this topic a couple months ago.

Home: Our January project includes remodeling the bathroom. My dh put in a new floor this week, and I am picking out the paint and accessories. We are thinking saige or olive green with neutral accessories as we go for the natural or "spa" look. Fun!

Homeschooling: Our son is making slow but steady progress, which is so good to see! He is working on spelling, and learning those darn vowels! He is also going to start guitar lessons next week! He continues to attend a vocational program 3 times per week, which so far has been a very positive venture for him! Our daughter continues to love to learn. She loves books, and loves to write, and do projects of any kind. She already wants to learn to sew! Today she made cards with stamps and wants to send them to all her friends!

So much more, but this is getting long already! Much more to come, as 2006 unfolds, hopefully our little farm will as well!

Michelle
