My Everyday Barn Responsibilities
Wednesday, October 17, 2007
I wanted to let everyone on here know what I do everyday in the barn, so here is a post about it.
I have started getting up at around 8:00-8:30am these past few week. I get up and put my barn clothes on, and get a jacket. (It has been kind of chilly here, mostly just the cold wind.) I usually turn the hose on to clean the chicken waterers out before I go to the barn, the nob is around the house.
This is the order in which I do things:
Clean the chicken waterers out with a scrub brush and the hose. I usually put vinegar in them too, but we have been out. Once they are filled, I put them on the stone ledge so they can drink outside. The ledge is only about 6inches high.
If Eric needs help with feeding the chickens, then I help him throw the food out by the apple tree. We stopped feeding them in their feeders because they can be outside more, and the goats won’t eat their food if it’s on the ground.
Then I go and help Eric fix the stall door. Dad took the bottom door off to fix it, and the top door had all ready come off earlier, so we put a piece of plywood up and lean the two doors against it. The goats try to get in the stall to eat the food.
If I feel like Jocelyn and Amanda could use a bit more sleep because they were up late the night before, I’ll maybe feed the hoses and give them hay, and milk and feed the goats. We give the goats alfalfa, not hay, because it helps with producing more milk. We feed it to the doelings too.
Then I will go to the house and make breakfast if we eggs and such to make it.
That was just in the morning. This is at night:
I feed the chickens while Eric cleans the waterers. I will help him if he whines at me enough, otherwise, I just give him the “barn responsibilities speech”. I tell him I clean them every morning without complaint, and he should too.
Then if Amanda wants me to, I feed the horses and give them hay. I can’t clean out the stalls, but I wish I could. I LOVE those horses… I wish we could ride them. If I could, I would everyday! We are probably are going to sell Dulcy at least, we have had a few people come and look at her. She has a really white “blanket” on her rump, and that’s not very common nowadays… She’s really beautiful horse…
Jocelyn will sometimes ask me to feed the goats, so I do that. Then she will ask me to milk them. So, she doesn’t come down to barn really at all.
Then, I will have to go down to the barn to feed and put Pemberly in the barn, after I take the milk to the house and put it in water.
And, if the bucks get out, I have to find something to keep them in. If anybody on here has bucks, you know what kind of a nuisance they can be. I had to hammer up another piece of plywood the other night… And all they wanted was some hay! I, of course, gave them some. I’m nice, see, and nobody else really gives them any… Just kidding!
Now it’s starting to get dark and the chickens are going to their stall and getting settled on their roosts, so we close up the door. After we make sure everything is alright, we turn the lights off and go eat dinner!
Then we get up and do it all over again! Plus, if the goats get out or get into where the hay and alfalfa is, we get to chase them out! I love wrangling bucks, and them trying to get under your skirt while trying to get them back in their stall… Sound fun? Oh, yes… I also like to take pieces of my apple and throw it to the ground. The chickens LOVE to try and get the tiny piece of apple I throw. It’s fun to watch them all run to it though. I try to throw it to the ones who are slow and that didn’t really get any. They also like to eat (old goat) milk and cheese.
I like feeding one called Crooked-Beak out of the can. He is deformed and weighs about nothing. The bottom of his beak grew sideways and he can’t eat properly. I think he is going to die soon. He’s Hannah’s chicken and she has been feeding hi separately, because the roosters peck at him.
Ok… I think that is all for this post. I hope you enjoyed reading about what I do with our animals and in the barn! Please leave me a comment and tell me what you think! Also: check out the latest on my home school blog, The Milk & Honey Tea House. I would love for anyone to comment there, if you have the time! Thanks for reading my kind of long post!

Nice post!! We never had a barn really, but we always, when I was a chld, had rabbits to care for, and most often ducks, geese, and chickens. There were times I hated taking care of the animals, but now I really miss it!!
I had a chicken too!! Her name was Goldie. She was special too!!
The verse that you have at the bottom of your posts...I really needed to hear/read that today...Thanks!
*God Bless*

WOW, You have a VERY busy morning. My morning is pretty simple, I wake up, and a least 3-4 days out of the week I will feed the cows and horses for my dad. We feed them 70% alfalfa and 20% hay. I like feeding the cows and horses, because I get to use my dad's tractor, and I LOVE driving it!!!! And after that, I eat and start school. And after lunch I go down and I feed my horse and My horse's pasture mate their supplements and groom them.
Well I just thought I would stop by and see how you are doing!
