Dear friends, my little grand daughter, Velvet Rose, is in the hospital. She is Bi-Polar ( according to the DR's) and threatened to kill herself. Velvet is 11 years old. Pray the Lord will touch this young life and keep it for His Glory. My heart is broken. Pray our family as we deal with .

Friday, August 29, 2008 - Glenda Update 3

Posted by Shan (Sweetie)

Talked to Elizabeth and Glenda had her surgury on Wednesday to remove her kidney. She was only hospitalized overnight and is home healing.  This is Friday, August 29th, Elizabeth said they were fairing well, but Mom was definately two days out of surgury...and where you would expect physically at that time.

Keep praying, hopefully by removing this very diseased kidney, Glenda can begin to truly heal! We know God has her healed already!

hugs

Sweetie

August 29, 2008 - Can you remove a friends list?

Posted by Karen

Hello Homestead bloggers.  I'd like to say a special hello to the handfull of ladies that posted on my blog, asking about me since I've been away from the computer.  Thank you Trixi, Farrah and Julia  and of course, Kitty who is a close friend that I keep in touch with in other ways.

I'm dissappointed that one can go from being a long standing  "top commenter" here  (one who reads and comments on others' blogs) to not blogging at all for a long time and come back to wonder if all those friends from my "friends list" even cared I'd been away.  Plus bunches had removed me as a friend of theirs altogether I noticed.  So I'm hurt but won't stay that way.        Blogging is strange....

On a different note some of the things that have been going on have been:

We took a short trip to Memphis with hubby on business.

My hubby's dad has been really sick and in the hospital.

Our oldest daughter is in hospital passing kidney stones.

Been gathering lots of eggs.  (getting double yolks from our new chickens!  I'll take a pic soon of the pretty baby blues and greens and avacado green and browns and white eggs.)

Got lots of rain from Faye which relieved our parched area.

Gearing up for Gustav here in South Mississippi  : (  When Katrina hit we were without power for over a week and lost all our food in freezers/fridg, waited in long lines to get gas that got higher by the minute, lots of clean up, etc....We're going tonight to the store to stock up on some things for the storm.  We've already got some batteries.  And since Katrina we've gotten a generator and a window unit air conditioner so we can at least stay in the house during 90 plus temps outside if the power goes out.

Lots of things going on at Church.  I'll be teaching 1st and 2nd grade Sunday School for the new Church year again and it will begin Sept. 1st.

Our 26th Wedding Anniversary is next Wednesday.

Our oldest granddaughter turned 5 this week.  Her party is Saturday.

Our 3rd grandchild is due Thanksgiving day!  It's a boy!

Several little trips planned to flea markets and such.

My first post in so long should be more exciting but maybe next time.   With pictures!

~God bless everyone~

Friday, August 29, 2008 - Happy Friday!

Posted by BlueApple
It's been a long week!  With school starting next week I had extra children in my child care this week...I had 8 children most days and one day 10.  We had fun but I'm exhausted!  I'm looking forward to next week when I start my preschool program for them - helps to have a bit more structure and they love learning!

This weekend is our annual camping trip with family - there are at least six families going which is always fun.  I plan to do a lot of reading and sleeping!  I don't think I've read an entire book all summer - just too much going on and when I do read I fall asleep!  LOL

I hope everyone has a wonderful long weekend!

Thursday, August 28, 2008 - WARNING for dog owners!!!!

Posted by Michele
If you have a dog READ IT -- then forward to all you know who do have a dog !
If you don't have a dog --forward to all you know who do have a dog
as well as to those who love pets !!

This is true:
http://www.snopes.com/critters/crusader/xylitol.asp

Warning to all dog owners - pass this on to everyone you can.

Last Friday evening, I arrived home from work, fed Chloe, our 24 Lb. Dachshund, just as I normally do. Ten minutes later I walked into the den just in time to see her head inside the pocket of Katie's friend's purse. She had a guilty look on her face so I looked closer and saw a small package of sugar-free gum. It contained xylitol. I remembered that I had recently read that sugar-free gum can be deadly for dogs so I jumped on line and looked to see if xylitol was the ingredient. I found the first website below and it was the one. Next, I called our vet. She said to bring her in immediately.

Unfortunately, it was still rush hour and it took me almost 1/2 hour to get there. Meanwhile, since this was her first case, our vet found another website to figure out the treatment. She took Chloe and said they would induce her to vomit, give her a charcoal drink to absorb the toxin (even though they don't think it works) then they would start an iv with dextrose. The xylitol causes dogs to secrete insulin so their blood sugar dro p s very quickly. The second thing that happens is liver failure. If that happens, even with aggressive treatment, it can be difficult to save them. She told us she would call us. Almost two hours later, the vet called and said that contents of her stomach contained
2-3 gum wrappers and that her blood sugar had dropped from 90 to 59 in 30 minutes. She wanted us to take Chloe to another hospital that has a critical care unit operating around the clock. We picked her up and took her there. They had us call the ASPCA poison control for a case number and for a donation, their doctors would direct Chloe's doctor on treatment. They would continue the iv, monitor her blood every other hour and then in 2 days test her liver function. She ended up with a central line in her jugular vein since the one in her leg collapsed, just as our regular vet had feared. Chloe spent almost the entire weekend in the critical care hospital. After her blood sugar was stabilized, she came home yesterday. They ran all the tests again before they released her and so far, no sign of liver damage. Had I not seen her head in the purse, she probably would have died and we wouldn't even had known why.

Three vets told me this weekend, that they were amazed that I even knew about it since they are first learning about it too. Please tell everyone you know about xylitol and dogs. It may save another life.
