Moo!

So I'm on my way home from town, and the neighbour's cows are all over the road again. I honk. At the last minute, one of the stupid heifers jumps out in front of the truck. I hit the brakes and honk again. Cow goes right, I go left.
To add insult to injury, when I get home, Breakneck is out repairing our unused fences. I recall what day it is. It's the day we got a call from the neighbour saying he's got three Jerseys to cull. We are most likely going to end up cow owners ourselves by the end of the day.
Sure enough, a couple of hours and several hundred dollars later, we're trying to figure out how to get a 10-year-old cow and her three-day-old calf home. Dave's happy as a clam. He had cows growing up. He likes milk. And the calf's half-Angus, so that makes beef.
I did not have cows growing up. I do not like milk. I know we need to do this in order to keep our kids healthy and fed, but I'm a little intimidated by the thought of going cow-wrestling without Dave for backup. He's on nights all weekend, so that makes three evenings where I'm the milker.
I'm consoling myself with the thought of butter, yogurt and maybe even cheese. It's not just the milk budget, which is crazy enough. There are a lot of other things we'll eat more of now too.
But, as I warned Dave, if she's ornery, she's hamburger.
I'll keep you posted.

I want a cow, but I dont think one will fit in our backyard and neither my husband or I have much experience with them....i did milk one once, does that count? LOL!
Anyway, congrats on your new cow, I hope they dont give you as much trouble as the ones in the road.
BTW - I have alway wanted to know.....just how happy is a clam?

.... I lived next door. I would milk your cow for you! :)
I spent about 8 years milking bovines. Lovely, that. Ironically, I posted about the downfalls of comercialized milk this morning.
I see from the blog I can't comment on that you found the Berean Call. :) I like Debating Calvanism - now that's what I consider a balanced book! It's written by White & Hunt who approach the topic from the polar opposites. Both are convinced they win their argument at the end. Beautifully writen, really.
Enjoy the cow!
Ashley
Cows, gotta love 'em.

Mess up and you're hamburger, that's funny. LOL
As for the cow being jumping out in front of your truck, it's probally thinking somthing like one of it's California cousins: "Like, What Heifer?"
