Would you just look at this! How frustrating is this!

This beautiful, giant tomato, and it actually doesn't have blossom end rot - it's been so dry, I've lost so much fruit - and this is the one they have to chew up. They couldn't possibly eat the fruit with a bad patch on the bottom, could they?

Argh. I hate them.

On to more peaceful thoughts. To answer Jackie's question, yes, we are thankfully a four-season area. We don't have the beautiful colours like the east coast, some years. It depends on the type of fall.

Years with a sharp, hard frost to start the fall result in the leaves just turning brown and dropping. If we get an extended period of cool with little or no frost, we get some colour. Interestingly, the grasses are almost more beautiful. One of my favourite fall locations is the army shooting range between Brandon and Wawanesa. It's closed to public access, but there are roads that go along beside it. Because it's covered in wild, uncut grass, you see the most amazing shades of red, orange, gold and green all together.

The trees in our immediate area, being mostly poplar, will give a beautiful gold display, with the underbrush lighting up in red and orange from dogwood and chokecherry. Places with oak also take on a bronze tone. It's quite something.

Well, no frost predicted yet this week. We'll see how things hold out. The garden is pretty well shutting down, though. And here, I was complaining to myself about such a long season, since we started seedlings in March. Can't wait for next March now. Silly me.
