Patterns

I have finally decided that I am sick and tired of fashion.  I love the summer dresses, but I have a complete disdain for winter fashion.  So, I want to start now to make some fall things for myself.  What type of patterns should a beginning sewer use and is there anyone who can give me a tutorial?  I thought about trying www.sensibility.com Regency dress, but I'm not sure if I want something quite that long.  Any ideas and help would be greatly appreciated!

For myself I like to choose a simple skirt pattern, and then make a simple blouse to match. I have bought my patterns from Wal-Mart and they work just fine. I usually but the Easy Stitch and Save patterns. they tend to be quick and easy and more decent than most out of the books. I can make two or three in the time it takes to make one of the others. I have been sewing since i was 13 years old.(Not little things either, I am talking making my own clothes and wearing them to church.) I will be turning 30 this fall so I have used a lot of patterns and this is what seems to work the best for me.
I hope you have great luck and success, Sewing can be SEW FUN!!!!

I started with one skirt pattern ( a panel skirt pattern from Wal Mart) and t shirts from Wal Mart. The skirt pattern was pretty straight forward and was easy for me to produce in a short amount of time. I have recently tried a pattern from Kathy's Modest Sewing patterns and found them very easy. The only problem was that they are very slow to ship the patterns. Be prepared to wait 6 weeks. I know there was someone else on here that have had problems with them also.

Let me tell you girl, I once tried to make my own dresses, lets just say that they ended being worn as nightgowns. LOL I would have never left the house in them. They were horrific looking. The breast pleats were in my pockets, I kid you not. They were so funny. So my dress making days ended the same week that they started. I really prefer skirts and have occasion actually made one that i can wear out in public. God has been really good to me in the way of providing me with modest things to wear at garage sales and thrift stores, and being a plus size women, sometimes thats not as easy at it sounds. Some of my best outfits cost me less than a dollar. So good luck with your project and I hope to see your handy work soon.............Kitty

I too am trying to sew. I need dresses and since skirts are easier than dresses that is where I will begin. Plan is to make one for me and my daughters anyway this is the first for me. I got my pattern at Joann's I don't know if you have that where you live but they have a pretty big selection on patterns. I got the simplicity patterns I also caught them on sale for less than $2.00. I will be posting on my sewing adventures soon and look forward to reading about yours.

I use the skirt patterns and dress patterns from Wal-Mart.
I am making a dress from a Wal-Mart pattern, it is just a straight dress that stops under the knees. I think it is a very pretty pattern. Wal-Mart has some very good patterns.
I also use online skirt tutorials. There are some neat ones for tiered skirts.
