Sat-20-Oct-2007 - Mommy Thoughts

Posted in Thoughts & Ideas

"Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house:
thy children like olive plants round about thy table." Psalm 128:3

I thought about this verse today, and realized I have no idea what an olive plant even looks like. My curiosity aroused, I went to allposters.com and looked up "olives".....

I have been reading a book, The Spiritual Power of a Mother by Michael P. Farris. This little book is jam-packed with deep, rich, provoking thoughts on motherhood and homeschooling. I am so grateful to my dear friend, Patti, for sending it to me!

I love this description of the purpose of homeschooling! This is found on the very first page of the preface; and as soon as I read these lines I knew I was going to find much wisdom inside the pages of this tome!

"Homeschooling is the ultimate tool for discipleship. You can fake spirituality in Sunday school and church. It is impossible to fake it at home on a sustained basis."

How true!

I also found deeply thought-provoking the concept that how we live our faith as mothers teaches our children more than what we say. For example, this book explains that if you complain about your circumstances, you teach your children that God is inadequate. If you resist or resent your husband's authority, you teach your children that God can also be resisted or resented.

What a thought!

I find it so humbling to realize what my example can teach my sons . . . .

We can teach our children to be hypocritical, by stressing how important it is to read our Bibles, but not reading them ourselves. We can teach that God is our provider, but undo the teaching when we go to pieces over an unexpected expense. We can teach that believing in God is the most vital, critical choice to make, but then confuse our children when we don't make time for God during our busy week . . . .

May God help us to live by faith in the sight of these little olive plants He has given us to raise ..... and may they one day bear much fruit for Him!

Sun-21-Oct-2007 - olive trees

Posted by tami lewis

here is something i wrote a few weeks ago about this subject

psalm 128:3

Thy wife [shall be] as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.

olive plants grow abundantly. but only every 3 or 4 years. to me that means having children every few years is God's plan..
around the table means as in around the king's table , sacred. whoa, our bearing of children is sacred!!!
the olive symbolizes peace, wealth and plenty. the opposite of what many think of when they think of several children.
