Modest Barbie?

{ 09:23 , Thursday, June 19, 2008 } { 4 comments } { Link }

Just a thought here ... but none of the Barbie clothes I've seen are modest.  The skirts and dresses are extremely short.  The tops are either low cut or show the mid-driff.  They are very indecent ... not much of a role model for a six year old.

I was playing Barbie with my daughter today and it just hit me how immodest Barbie has become.  She used to have better clothes many moons ago (at least dresses that went WAY past her knees).  I don't know if it's the Barbie's we have or if it's all Barbies, but I'd love to see more modest clothing for Barbie.

How about a Christian Barbie?  That'd be cool.

We try to teach our children modesty and decency and respect for themselves and others. And when we play Barbie, I try to keep this in mind when we're playing.  It just seems a little hard when Barbie's clothing barely covers her. If I sewed, I'd make her some clothes, but I don't sew.

Anyway, these are the ramblings of a Mama ...

I have always purchased the princess Barbie style dolls for my daughers - the clothes are long beautiful flowing dresses. I recently purchased 2 "collectible" Barbies at the dollar store. One is a Japanese princess with Full Japanese traditional garb and the other is Rennaisaince (sp???) and she also is in full historical (very modest - woo hoo!) clothing! :0) So that's my solution so far. Plus I purchased porcelain dolls at the Goodwill - I remade her dress to a Laura Ingalls style complete with bonnet and gave to my daugher for Christmas. She REALLY enjoyed it! :0) They think it's the neatest thing (they don't know about American Girls, and it was a fraction of the cost and I plan to try to make more clothes for them to feed the interest!

Hadn't thought of it, since I have a boy, but you are right!!! I agree they shouldn't be dressing like that. Even the brat dolls are practically dressings like hookers!!

I like the response from the other commenter saying she buys the holiday or special Barbies that come in full dress.

God's Blessings,
Amy Jo

when I was a girl, my barbie's "favorite" clothes were the ones I made from my mom's scraps. mostly treco and swimsuit material (it didn't fray, so I didn't actually have to sew anything - LOL!) I am hoping that will be my daughters favorite way to play too. but I like the idea of the historical and ethnic barbies (although my sister has started collecting barbie, and would freak if I let my girls play with the same ones she will not even take out of the box!)

I saw an hour interview with the president of the maker of Barbie (which escapes me, Matel?). The interesting thing about the interview was that they said Barbie has a much shorter life span for girls than it used to. That is, girls used to play with Barbies until they were 10 or 12, but now their window to sell them is between about age 4-8. So, the fact that they know this AND they sell her in slut clothes is really quite disturbing to me. Though, as an aside, if you head to your local department store you will also find a plethora of equally short skirts and mid-drift tops for your own REAL little girl. I'm with the other bloggers--I think the long dresses and homemade is the way to go. Just make sure to cut it extra wide for her 55 inch chest.
