Ok, not sure what to title my blog.

• 2007-Apr-9 - WOWWIE! I’ve been so busy!

I don’t have a lot of time so this is going to be really short!

Yesterday I got back from a 3 day vacation.

We left Thursday around 10am for Nashville.

We caravanned with some good friends of ours, the Marcums.

After a few hours we got to our bed & breakfast. The next day we went to the Wallers’ Seder. A Seder is a Jewish meal/celebration in honor of the Passover. It includes reading the Haggadan and eating food that symbolizes the Israelites’ slavery (which wasn’t very tasty).  The Wallers are missionaries that go to Israel to share the gospel. We got up the next day and loaded up for the long drive home.

And Wensday we leave for Chicago! So, I won’t be on for the next week.

See? I told you it was going to be short.

NEWS: Dixons just had their baby, Joe’s got something cool to say, and I got a new game for my DSLite!

 BTW, please vote for me!

I got nominated for “the funniest blog.”

My mom posted about it!

You can also find it on the Front Porch.

• 2007-Mar-27 - I’ve been busy!

Besides traveling I’ve been editing the video on my site.

It’s been a lot of work!

The trip went well. We drove straight for 8 hours on the way back from Indianapolis.

So, I decided I’d put LIL’ Buddy under internal surgery (whatever that means)!

I had Windows on it at first but it was running SO SLOW! So I set up a dual boot.

I rewrote Windows and portioned the disk for Linux!

The hard drive is only 40gigs so I set 20gigs to the Windows partition and 17 to my Linux partition.

The other 3gigs are minor partitions for the swap, FAT32, ect.

For all you who are wondering, (which isn’t many) “what Linux disro”?

I’m using KanotiX. It’s light but offers a large range of useful programs.

Please leave me a comment if you have any questions.

I updated my other blog!

• 2007-Mar-17 - Ok, Ok, Time for a new post!

This is going to be short and sweet!

Mrs. Dixon suggested that I post the ads that Joe made for me!

So, here they are.

These are the ones that would go in the sidebar.

Just tell me which one you want and I’ll send you the code for them.

If you put my ad up on your blog I’ll put your ad up on mine.

Deal?*

We had quite a bit of fun today!

Tim and his family came over for the whole day!

First we went out back to throw knives (a little hobby of mine).

Then we put on some music and skate boarded for a little while.

We had a pretty good time.

Amanda (aka SuperAngel) got an HSB2 blog! So, be sure to check it out!

Well, I guess I got the 20 comments I was crying for!

LOL!

I’ll be updating my other blog soon.

• 2007-Feb-18 - Three Things to Look for in a Laptop

Just because the laptop is made by Dell or HP doesn’t mean it’s the best laptop to buy!

I’ve learned that there are three main things to look for when shopping for a laptop.

And now that Vista is out, these three thing are not only preferred, they’re mandatory!

#1. Ram

#2. Processor

#3 Hard drive speed

RAM stands for Random Access Memory. It’s what your programs, background operations, and OS (operating system) are running on. When you launch a program it pulls it up off the hard drive and sets it on the ram. The ram is operating the program.

To operate Windows XP, it takes at least 128MB (MB = megabyte – a byte is one bit of information - just one little pocket of data. Mega is million. So, a megabyte is an amount of data one million bytes large). Windows Vista takes a minimum of 512MBs, and that’s  just to run the OS itself! You’ll want at least 1GB (GB = gigabyte - 1024 megabytes) of ram. That should be enough to run the OS and some regular tasks like email, office programs, and to perform light gaming.

I highly recommend 2GBs of ram.

The processor is the “brain” of your computer. Highly important: DON’T get a cheap processor. The processor organizes or processes all the information that is being sent around the computer. There are two main processor manufacturing companies, Intel and AMD. With AMD you’ll get more bang for your buck, but Intel leads the industry. It’s slightly faster (meaning it processes the information more rapidly) and its energy consumption is more efficient. Both are very important with a laptop. But AMD isn’t far behind. Both make the duo core processor. If you do go with AMD I’d get the 64x2 which is a duo core processor, 64 bits in each core. A little history: when the processor was first made it only had one core that was usually 32 bits. Up until now, that’s what we’ve used but these days they are making them with two cores which is very efficient! The best have two cores that are 64 bits each.

I highly recommend the Intel Core 2 Duo (T5500) processor. Pricy but well worth it!

The hard drive speed is one of the most overlooked specs. Sometimes it’s not even on the spec list! But it’s very important to have a fast hard drive. Most people think, “Oh, if I have a large hard drive my computer with run nice and fast.” Well, not so true. It’s important to have a “good sized” hard drive but it doesn’t affect the speed so much. If you max your hard drive up then you write information over what could be virtual memory (virtual memory is the part of the hard drive that works like ram). But that’s not a big threat because most new hard drives are at least 80GBs.

Laptops run from a battery, so you’re naturally going to want a long lasting one.

A slow hard drive won’t take up as much juice as one that’s fast. But if you have a slow one (I’m talking rpm’s) then you’ll have a slow computer. 4200 rpm’s is considered slow. If the laptop says, “low power consumption,” you can bet it has a 4200 rpm hard drive. The faster the hard drive spins, the faster the computer can read the information off of it and onto the ram. So having a lot of ram with a nice processor isn’t good enough. I mean, you’ll be able to launch as many programs as you want but they’ll all take FOREVER to finally load because the hard drive is so slow.

Now a medium hard drive speed would be considered 5400 rpms. And for a laptop hard drive that’s about the max you’ll find but for desktops (which you don’t really care how much power they suck up), they go up to about 7200 rpms (that’s really fast)!

Anyhow, I’m sure I’ve board you all to death!

LOL

I can’t really help you find a laptop unless I know what your budget is. Just remember you get what you pay for. And that’s especially true with computers! I wouldn’t spend less than $1,000 on a laptop. If you planned on only spending $800, then just wait. Save a little more money and spend the full $1,000.

I would recommend HP, Sony, or Dell.

If your budget is $1,500, I would probably recommend the HP BrightView. It’s running Vista Premium (way better than Vista Home).

Intel Core 2 Duo (T5500) processor

Built in 802.11a/b/g Wireless

Burns and plays DVDs and CDs

2GB of DDR2 ram

200GB hard drive

5400 RPMs

And an pretty good sized graphics card to run Vista’s Aero (GeForce Go 7600 with 256MB VRAM)

This laptop comes with a bunch of other cool things like a built in webcam and remote for watching movies, controlling PowerPoints, and just navigating through your computer. You can buy this laptop anywhere. I found it myself at Circuit City.

Anyhow I’ve said enough. Please comment if I’ve mis-communicated something or if you feel I’m flat out wrong!

• 2007-Feb-15 - And that's a threat!!!!

Hmmm….

Well I'll decide one week from today.

Come and check on my blog here throughout the week.

I will either have 20 comments or it will be a big blank page!!!

(Sounds kinda like a threat, huh?)

• 2007-Feb-15 - Hmmm.

I’m thinking of getting rid of the blog altogether!

Hmmm…

I’m not getting enough comments (but I guess that’s my fault for not ever blogging on it) and my other blog keeps me busy enough.

Besides a blog all about computers and other “geek stuff” doesn’t really mix with homestead stuff.

Does it?

I’m still deciding…

Let’s vote!

If I get five “yes, keep it” comments in the next week, I’ll keep it and try to post faithfully.

• 2006-Mar-14 - excuses! excuses!

Wow, I've been busy!

Ok, itÂ’s been a long time since my last post ...and I have a good reason....

A couple weeks ago my dad and I went to Nashville to do a conference. Basically we go from booth to booth talking to vendors about homeschooling, our magazine and gaining more info about their company's offerings to homeschoolers.

It was beautiful! I mean there was like an entire jungle in this one building. This was a massive building with huge waterfalls and ivy vines reaching ...hmm ...probably 50 ft to the ceiling.

It was awesome! Right after that, maybe a week after we left Nashville, we packed up again and headed for Florida.

It was a long drive, but we got there. :) That convention there was big as well ...but not quite as big and beautiful as the Nashville one.

I like going to conferences with my dad.

If you look in this coming up issue you’ll see pictures of Florida that I took (look in the “Our Family To Yours” section).

Please go and check out my other blog! It doesn't take as long to load (I changed it).

• 2006-Feb-21 - Hmm... Definitely time for an update!

Unfortunately I don't have much to talk about. I've been posting everything I've been doing on my other blog. So, this post isn't to update you with what I've been doing or anything like that. It's just a post (so I dont feel like I've abandoned my blog)! I don't have a lot of bloggers in my friends list, so, I would appreciate it if you just add me to yours (I'm kinda in a race to see if I can get more "friends" than somone else).

:)

• 2006-Feb-9 - I've had a fun week!

Unfortunately I didn't get any comments on my last post so hereÂ’s a new one!

This week I've been helping my uncle and aunt get settled into their new home. they're pretty much completely moved in; we just have a lot of organizing to do.

Yesterday, after finishing all our work for the day, we went out to the back yard and shot my dads 410 shotgun. It was great fun!

That evening we rented a movie (some dumb Western my aunt chose) and bought some root-beer float material and a big bag of Milky-Way candy!

This morning my cousin Coie woke me up to show me how much snow there was outside. So, we all got up, built some snow men, filled them with dynamite and blew them up! It was awesome! Then we got into a big snowball fight (it was freezing)!

We're already planning a big paintball war for tomorrow.

So, thatÂ’s my week (at least the fun part)!

• 2006-Feb-2 - Wow! I've had a busy week!

Like always, my posts are short and boring, but I find that the short entrees get read the most. I have a stat counter on my other blog at: www.homeschoolblogger.com/darthyxpu and I found that when I write a REAL long entry, people will only stay on my blog for maybe, 3 mins. Not even enough time to read my entry! But when I write something fast and easy-to-read people linger around my blog for 10 to 15 mins. Weird huh? This is just my experience.

But none of this has anything to do with my title.

This post was actually about how busy my week was.

This week my uncle and aunt moved from the house they were renting. They moved to a nice house on 9.6 acres in Newport. So this week IÂ’ve been helping them move. Today we just unloaded the last trailer load, so they are officially moved in :).

The property makes for a great paintball war-field. ItÂ’s got both good sniper positions and close combat areas. ThereÂ’s a big hill, several trees, and a one acre pond with an island.  The only way to get to it is through a skinny piece of land (so I guess it's considered a peninsula). Anyhow, I'm real happy for them and hope that they like it there.

(was it to long?)

:)
