Update on our Duck

Posted in Critters
Thank so much to all of you who prayed for our little duck!  PRAISE GOD today!  Other than a voice change (probably from screaming her lungs out) and looking a bit disheveled, our Bubble Gum seems to be back to normal!!!  She is walking, swimming, eating, drinking and preening!  Thank you Lord for watching over this little one!  My son Gabriel was so happy, he said yesterday after praying he felt so much better because he knew his duck would be OK.  Thanks again to all of you for taking the time to pray with us.
Have a glorious day! Cindee

Urget prayer request

Posted in Critters
I know this may sound silly, but could you pray for our duck, Bubble Gum, and for my son, Gabriel.  He was carrying the ducks in a container from their pen to their pool in the front, the ducks jumped out and the dogs went after them.  One of them is fine, but the other one doesn't look good.  Gabriel, and all of us, feel so guilty and sad.  Pray that God heals this duck, nothing is too small, or too great for Him to take care of!  Thank you!

Pics of Our Ducklings

Here are our new ducks we just picked up this morning.  They are Mallards, my middle son named them Bubble Gum (girl) and Pockets (boy).  Thank you to everyone who gave us advise, I think we will have fun with our new family members.

Duck Advice?

Posted in Critters

Today we are going to go pick up a couple baby ducks from the feed store.  We own chickens, but never ducks.  I have read the duck section of the Carla Emery book, but would appreciate any advice.

Can I keep them with the chickens at night?  How big should they be? We have raccoons, skunks and possums, the dogs help keep them out, but I would worry about the ducks being out all night.

If we use a kiddy pool for the ducks would it be safe out in the yard with the chickens?  Could the chickens jump in it and drown?

I know these probably seem like silly questions, but I am pretty clueless!  Any advice on shelter, food, etc. would be great!  Thanks!

Chickens Roam Free!

Posted in Critters

We have three dogs: an old (14 years) setter/hound mix, a two year old Blue Heeler, and a one year old Terrier mix.

Our chickens stay in an outdoor pen about 15'x15' and they have an indoor coop that's about 6'x15'.  Sometimes we put the dogs in their kennel and we let the chickens out.  A few times we have let the chickens out with the dogs when we are outside to keep an eye out.  Our oldest could care less about the chickens, he only tries to nip at them if they come within his reach.  The little Terrier is afraid of them, and won't go near them.  Our Blue Heeler is the one we have to watch, he likes to chase them around.

Well, for the past few days the weather has been nice and sunny so we decided to let the chickens out with the dogs, we even decided to let them be, and just checked up on them once and a while.  The rooster is very protective of the hens and anytime there is trouble he is right there ready for a fight!  Amazingly all the dogs including the Heeler have totally left them alone to wonder the yard!  I am so happy, and I'm sure the chickens are too!  I still don't trust the dogs enough to leave the chickens out when we aren't home, but at least they can roam free when we are here.  I like to see them walking around and they look so pretty against the green grass, and all their feathers have filled in since their molt.  I think I will take some pictures of them today and post them. :)

chicken bedding question...HELP!

Posted in Critters
I have 8 hens and a rooster, I am using straw for their bedding in the coop, I put in a whole bail which makes a foot thick covering (over concrete) and change it twice a year.  The problem is I have a very strong gag reflex and cannot shovel it out, either my husband (who said when I wanted chickens, they were MY responsibility), or  the kids, who don't do a very good job, have to do it.
I know.....what kind of homestead woman am I? I can't help it!  I have also tried wearing a dust mask, which I also cannot stand because I don't like things covering my nose and mouth like that! LOL OK, I am just pathetic, I Know!
I would be interested in knowing what everyone else uses and if there are some less stinky alternatives.  Should their bedding be cleaned out more often, and how often?  Any other advice?

Chicken Question

Posted in Critters
My eight hens are getting their back feathers pulled out by our one rooster.  I've seen them sit down and just let him do it, now their backs are getting bald!  Any suggestions other than getting rid of the rooster?
