Is there sex discrimination when dealing with creditors?
I blogged the other day about my credit card interest rate. How I had, in my quest to pay early...been paying too early which then resulted in being late (I know...weird). And the consequence of that was a hefty 32% interest rate (robbery in my book). In the last 1 1/2 weeks I've called them three times, talking to different people, saying this is unacceptable, asking them to lower the interest, yadda, yadda - to which they would kindly reply that they will review our "status" in February...then if we are deemed worthy they will lower it to 19% (how sweet of them). So why am I so angry (other than the obvious)? Because my husband kept saying.."let me call them" to which I was offended and said "you will not get anywhere...I've tried and tried." So he calls anyway and I think "go ahead, you are just going to get frustrated." A few minutes into the call (he is good, let me tell ya') he has it lowered to 14% - not even the crummy 19% they would lower it to in February if we were "good." Now, 14% is still too high in my opinion but that's not the point! The point is I got NOWHERE and they buckled when he called! WHAT?

Could be he had a calmer, gentler voice because it was his first call.........not his 5th call?
Could be that he is the primary name on the account and that is why?
Who knows, who cares? You have a lower rate!!

LOL, no actually I was the calmer, nicer one.....he said change it and they jumped!

That's too bad. I never thought that gender would play a role, but it's good food for thought. Those cards can be deadly and some cards can have an interest rate that can go up to 81% of the balance! Just cut up that card, switch your balance to another company and get as far away from credit cards as you can!

Hi, we're dealing with this, too. One late payment and our interest rate is up to 32%. We're getting nowhere at this point. My hubby told me that if you close the account (even with a balance owing) they can no longer up the rates, charge the outrageous late fees, etc. I think we may do this, if that is true. It truly is loan-sharking, isn't it? Your friend, the Proto-Catholic.

Interesting, This has happened with my wife as well. I think the rep is more easily intimidated by a mans voice and demeanor. Where with a woman they are more abt to call their bluff. This is my best guess anyways. But the good news is you got it lowered alot!

This is the same thing with my husband. He can get anything he wants to with just giving them his "manly voice".
